Subject: Is There Not Enough Time?
Today I did my first triathlon, and I got the bug. Although I only did a relay, I want to try an individual before the end of the year. However, the season is almost up.  There is one race that is in about two or three weeks that I'm looking at, a sprint tri (800m swim, 16mi bike, 4mi run.)  My question is: Is there enough time to train for the bike?  I'm in really good shape, not to sound cocky.  i do about 2.5 hrs of hard swimming 6 days/week, my 800m swim time is about 10 minutes, and my 3 mile time is a 19:27. Is there enough time to train for the bike in two weeks?

Well, it's good you have the swimming down, that's the one that I worry about with a new person enteriing the sport. I think you'll be just fine, try to pace yourself though and don't go out with a certain split/pace in mind, just go and enjoy it.

It wouldn't hurt to practice transitions in your back yard first, that will take some of the chaos away on race day, knowing you have a "plan" of execution.

It's good your in shape but you must respect the three diciplines, it's a different bag when you have to go from one to the other in a race... takes time to certainly to go from biking to running, your legs will feel strange to say the least. It's doable, with common sense on hand.

Sure.  You could certainly cover the distance today on the bike.  You almost certainly won't be as high up in the rankings as you will be on the swim and run, but you'll do fine and definitely won't be last.  And it'll give you something to work to beat next year!

Enjoy the training, and enjoy your first real tri!

ok, decided to start training today. ment to start off with 5.5 miles on a bike, ended up only going with 4.5 because of a broken chain.  I'm gonna try it though.

Yankee99999 you swim 3 miles in 19:27 (that's pretty stinking fast, like 00:22 seconds per hundred yards for three miles fast

With those times in the 800m swim and 5kish run, you'd be silly not to think you could finish a 16mi bike, even if you just cruised it for experience. Go hard in the swim and run, relax and have fun on the bike, learning as you go.
