Subject: Cannondale supersix 6 (apex) or caad 10 105 or rival

Hello everybody, I'm new to the site and forum.  I've been trying to choose my first road bike for triathlon (but still use recreationally) and have narrowed my search to the supersix and caad 10.  My LBS has the '12 supersix apex on sale for $1500, while the '12 caad 10s and other supersix models are full msrp.  I know the '13 models are trickling out in some areas, so I'd like to get a good deal on a '12 (unless '13s are better deal with new components), but since I live in the middle of nowhere (Evansville, IN), bike and bike shop options are limited.  I can go to Cincinnati or Louisville or Nashville, but it would be nice to have a local LBS.

From what I've read, they are both great frames, with an edge to the supersix if price were not a factor for being slightly more responsive and a little more forgiving.  I can't help but wonder why the superix apex is the only one on sale, though my LBS said they had sold around 40 in the last 2 weeks at the sale price.  Are the Apex groupset and R501A tires that bad??  Do I "at least need 105s"?

Thanks!

Picking between the superxis and the CAAD10 is pretty much a matter of preference and if you want aluminum or carbon.  You will hear great things about the frame and plenty of people listing different reasons why one is better than the other.

I recently went through this process and ended up choosing the supersix, albeit i got mine for the same price but with the 105 group set, which end up being the shifters, rear and front deraileur only as cannondale uses other parts for brakes and crank.

I didnt test the apex equipped supersix but i have try apex on other bikes and i havent noticed the difference shifting to 105.  I have also spoken with people that got the supersix with Apex and are more than happy with it.

Unless you plan in racing at a high level, i think you will more than happy with Apex on your supersix....Hope that helps

I have Apex on my road bike awesome set.

There are conflicting reports, but I say they're roughly equivalent with 105s overall.

They are also a touch lighter I am told.

Nobody I know has had issues with Apex, and neither have I.  Great product.

You will be happy with whichever you choose. Great bikes and group sets. Get whichever one you think will motivate you to ride the most!

I love my SuperSix with Rival.

You have two choices to make here.  Sram vs. Shimano and Carbon vs. aluminum.  Since all of the bike are at the same shop, I would suggest riding them and trying both the Sram and Shimano shifting systems as well as both frame materials.

I preferred the Sram since it was all on one lever and not two like the Shimano system.  You may also find you have a preference in frame material.

Get fitted.  Ride them both.  Make you decision.  I don't think you can go wrong with either bike. It's a matter of taste/preference.

Thanks everybody.  I will test a supersix apex and a caad10 105 this weekend and let you know!  I also now have the option of 20% off anything that is a 2012 model (I can also get 2013s at a slightly less discount), so I may also consider a CAAD 10 3 ultegra or the supersix with 105 groupset.  I'll decide on frame and SRAM vs. Shimano and go from there, though some combinations are only available in compact for the '12s.  Any thoughts on that?

To me a compact is more versatile…By just replacing the cassette it allows you to both have a good combination of gears for flats and climbs.  Most likely the cassette that comes with the bike is a 12-27, just get another one 11-23 and you will be set.

I bought this year a CAAD 10- Rival and love it.

My wife has a Synapsis with 105, I really do not like having to move the brake lever for shifting.

Therefore I prefer the SRAM groups.

Also the GUL racing colors of the CAAD 10 - Rival was by far my favorite color offered and huge reason for me to get the bike!

I agree on the rival colors.  I like both of them.  I think a lot of people do because I can't find the 2012 caad 10 rival anywhere - can't even order one from cannondale.

The CAAD10-105 came in white (also racing style).

That would have been my second choice, but as stated above I really do not like the Shimano shifters.

Too bad you don't live up here.  I stopped by a shop today that had 2012 CAAD 10 Rivals for $1500.

I don't know much about Sram Apex.  But I do have a 2011 SuperSix 3 (Ultegra), it is smooth riding and very responsive.

Love my Caad 10 Rival. Had it for a little over a year now. I do a lot of commuting on it, as well as other rides not on my tri bike. Definitely the best bang for the buck bike out there!

I was able to try a caad10 105 and a supersix apex today.  I wasn't wild about either groupset, but they were both ok.  I much preferred the ride of the supersix, however, on the rather bumpy test road.  It was very smooth.  The CAAD 10 certainly wasn't bad, and I wavered a bit, but in the end it didn't really matter because all of the 2012 caad 10s except the dura ace are sold out everywhere within 200 miles of me and at the warehouse in my size.

So, I'm going to go with a supersix.  Now the question is, do I go for the rival ($2100 tax included) or the ultegra ($2400 tax included).  I'm leaning towards the rival because while I was in the shop I also tried out a 2010 supersix 2 (red) and loved the shifters, which I could upgrade to eventually with the rival.  On the other hand, jumping up to ultegra and better wheels for $300 is tempting.  Any thoughts?

It's really a matter of preference... better wheels as in better training wheels... I really don't know how much that will matter..

I decided to go with the rival.  SRAM just felt better in my hands and I got them to knock off another $100.  I can put the money I saved by going rival towards some racewheels or that red lever set I liked so much later on.  Anyway, I'm glad the choosing is over and I can finally start riding in a few days.  Thanks for the help everybody.
