Cold weather is coming up, gym costs $40 a month. During the winter i'll be not working/ working part time and theres better things that can be done with that 40. What do you guys think of swimming exclusively open water in westuit with the feet/head covers? Bad idea or what?

Southern California, woo!  With the exception of some days due to weather, we can basically swim in open water year round with a wetsuit in cold and swimsuit in warmer days.  Which is great since chlorine makes my skin itch =_=  If the temps work out for you, you should try it out, just make sure you limit the time in the water if it gets too cold since you can still get hypothermia in a wetsuit.

Yeah the hypothermia is what scares me. I mean, surfers are out in the water during the winter, so I guess its worth a try.

You might be OK through Nov/Dec, but I think it'll be too cold in Jan/Feb.

You're cheap. Go to the pool. Proper intervals will lead to improvement your plan will lead to garbage survival swimming.
