Subject: My First Real Brick: Reality Check
Today I executed my first real brick: Bike to run. OMG...that was intense. I new I had to get here. I took the distance of my bike ride and my run for an upcoming tri and put them together into a workout. I was not worried about the transition since my plan was to complete the ride in front of my house, jump off the bike, drink some water and start the run. This took about 45 secs from completing 15 mile bike ride to start running a 5K. At first my legs would not go. It took about a mile for me to settle down. During that time I thought that i was not cut out for this, some cramps, very winded. I really admire you folks for achieving what you have done. This is tough stuff! Anyway, I kept at it and stumbled down the road. After some time things started to settle. I even caught myself daydreaming!! As I completed the 5K I was exhausted BUT...It passed very quickly. I feel I have tasted the tri life for the first time. Yesterday, I completed a .75 mile swim without stopping. Next step is to put it all together in my very own Sprint Tri. I think I'm going to make it. I love getting back in shape. I'm sleeping better. I'm dealing with work stress better. My clothes are too big. I'm 6 weeks out from my first real sanctioned tri and i feel like a kid again! For the moment, life is good. Thanks for being out there. When i'm working out, I know your out there too, pounding the pavement, pushing the bike or churning up the water.

Good job on trying this out. Don't worry if the first time was a shock to the system -- we've all been there. Do some more bike-run combos, and it will start to feel more normal. It really does get easier.

Lol!  Gotta laugh as we have all experienced this.  I asked for months if it got any better.  And yes it does.  Just keep doing what you are doing and the run will come.  Some days it's better than others though.

enjoy the journey,

Duane

Great job! Glad you are loving the lifestyle!

The more you train and the more bricks you do, the better it gets. Keep at it!

I did a brick a few days before my spring triathlon, and I felt like that.

Then when it came to race day, I start off running and settle into what felt like a comfortable pace, so I look down at my watch and I'm running 1min/mile faster than my goal pace!! I had to force myself to slow down a bit. I ended up running about 30sec/mile faster than my goal pace

Yes, bricks feel that way and yes....most of us find it takes half to 1 mile to get the back and legs to cooperate with really running.  I have found it best (FOR ME) to just focus on turning my legs over with good form.  If I allow the negative thoughts about whatever body part is hurting to creep in too much I keep that pathetic shuffle going and look/ feel lousy.

Having fun with training and racing is what is important.  Good job doing one in practice a few weeks before your first tri.  Now you have a better idea what to expect from your body race day.

I find doing the bike to run transition gets much better when I do intervals of them. I'll do 15 min bike  then 8 minute run and repeat 3 times back to back. Once you get used to that you can increase your times. It's an excellent workout....I am a sweaty beast when I'm done!! This can be on the road or with spin bike/treadmill in the basement.

When I first started doing bricks, I thought I was going to collapse!!!  Now, I do them once a week and they are my favorite workout!!!  I always feel like I'm totally dragging my feet in that first 1/2 mile of my run but then my RunKeeper audio cue tells me that I'm running about a 1 min/mile faster pace than when I do a run workout only!!!

one "trick" so to say that I have heard of and have personally used in helping the bike to run transition happen more effectively is to make sure you are peddling at a high cadence (90's) the last while before ending the bike.  This allows the legs to more readily adapt to the run...

This is my second season and have only done sprints so far. (I'm doing my first olympic distance in October)

I find that the time goes by a lot faster if I do sprint intervals during the run after the 1st. mile mark.

It takes my mind off any pains and gets it done faster.

Not sure if that's a great idea, but if I don't, I just end up shuffling the whole thing...

I'll be doing my first brick tomorrow. Kind of excited to see how my body performs. I'm usually not gassed after a 15 mile ride so we'll see how the legs hold up. I'll report back tomorrow.

When doing bricks, I usually try and start out below my normal pace, and slowly build up to my normal stride.  Although I feel like I'm running in mud, my pace is much faster and my heart rate is usually something ridiculous.

The one thing was that i was nervous and excited to give it a try. It was my first real gauge of how i was doing since starting a few months ago. I told myself that I would not expect anything other than to complete the brick. The only thing that would stop me was injury. I was not prepared for how hard it was that first mile but it does come back. I'm now going to do them once a week. My favorite time is early Saturday morning. I'm going to put it all together swim/bike/run once a month but i will watch and make sure i'm not trying to run a full sprint all the time. That would be bad(for me). I do like the idea of Brick sets based on time and not on distance as suggested in this thread. Next Saturday, I'm doing bike/run brick sets.

Don't worry - it gets a lot easier with more experience and training to the point you won't even fret about it whatsoever and you'll actually feel good and glad to start the run portion.

I'm going to disagree with most in that it doesn't get easier.  I think we just learn to accept the feeling.  I know for me it's one of my favorite parts of training/racing.  It's why I love endurance racing.  I love pushing thru the discomfort to find my stride and get back into that zone.  Some say we are crazy to do what we do, but that's only because they have never tried it.

Interesting post, I did my first real swim/bike brick and noticed quite a few things.

1. I was flustered during transition

2. My perceived exertion was much lower but so was my ability so I must have been tired.

3. I wasn't any more tired at the end of an hour and 1/2 workout than my normal 1 hour workout.

I can imagine a bike/run brick is even harder since you target the legs specifically on the bike.

This took about 45 secs from completing 15 mile bike ride to start running a 5K.

Excellent T2 time!

Weirdly, for me, I have a harder time with the swim->run transition of a splash n dash event than I do with the bike->run segment of sprint/oly races. Might have to do with the legs being warmed up more on the bike, or me just being a overall lousy swimmer.

Well, they are called BRICKs for a reason  Bike Run = ICK.  Smile

I did a nice little brick today too.  28 mile bike with a 4.25 run right after.  Transition area was my garage and my sons were shooting baskets in the driveway.  They like to cheer me on so that was fun.

I'm glad you are enjoying the lifestyle.  It's a blast!!
