The problem is Mont-Tremblant 70.3 is on Jun 23rd and I have Ironman Lake Placid on Jul 28th 2013.I have never done a half this close to a iron distance before. I would right now be more comfortable doing a half 6-8 weeks out. Am I being too cautious or just a big sissy? Shall this be the first time? I am a very experienced racer. There is no B race in my book. Thanks for any input.

I guess I want training advice from experience people that have done this. (Half so close to Ironman)Do the half in the midst of iron training, recovery 4-5 days then back to iron training. That just sounds painful but would that be about right?

I just did IM Mont-Tremblant last week so my first reaction is to highly recommend racing there.  Fantastic venue and organization.  You will get folks that say its way too close to your IM race.  I've done a half 3 weeks out from an IM a couple of times and didn't feel it hurt my IM, but I have nearly a 35 year endurance base as well.  Depends on what your goals for Placid are, as well as how hard you plan to "race" M-T.  Do you plan on tapering for M-T or train thru it?   If you taper for it you will be losing some training time that could be devoted to prep for Placid.  As you suggest, you definitely want to take it easy that first week after the half and then get back to IM training but by then...depending on length of your taper...you will be getting into your IM taper period.  Might be a sub-optimal situation.   Sign up for Ironman M-T 2013 instead???   I'll be there.  Good luck

Just do it!  Mont Tremblant is an amazing venue!  I did IMMT last week and it was incredible!  You are going to love the race and it will leave you itching for Lake Placid!  If you really want to be cautious, do the entire 70.3 at your planned Ironman pace and you shouldn't have any problems with recover.  If you weren't going to do this race, you probably have at least a 6 hour workout to do that weekend anyway.  Just lay off the intensity and enjoy the beautiful Mont Tremblant!

I've only done one IM, so for what it's worth, I did a HIM about 5 weeks out.  Was about the worst timing I could have chosen for recovery, training and taper.  YMMV

Yes James, you are a big sissy, but that has no bearing on whether you should race a HIM 6 weeks before IM. While it does seem to be wildly popular to do a HIM as 'prep' for IM, I do not find racing a HIM during the final 10 week build to IM to be advantageous. In fact in my own experience it has even proven to be counterproductive. Knowing full well that it would most likely cause me to underperform a bit in my IM, I would only do it because it would contribute to the overall fun of my race season rather than as an integrated component of my IM training. For me late April or early May would be better timing for a HIM if you have IMLP on the schedule. You could finish up a good LT block with something short followed immediately by a HIM, recover for a week or so, and still have a solid 10 weeks of IM-specific training (which could include time for a sprint or Olympic or so), then whatever taper protocol you ascribe to (LP 2013 is a week later than it has been at least for the past two years).

OTOH, if you do a HIM close enough to IM you may not have to give me as big of a handicap at LP as you will otherwise. So on second thought, disregard my advice.
