Subject: don't mind if i introduce myself...
Hi everyone. Inspired by the name of this forum, I decided to introduce myself immediately after discovering the site. My name's Dave and I'm a tri neophyte. I've been running for about 7 years, and I guess I became interested in triathlon during college when I had to wake up at 0-dark-thirty and bike to all my running races, run the stupid things, and bike back. Those days get pretty hard when I have a half marathon or something, but the bragging rights of such adventures are unbeatable. So I got to thinking, "hey Dave, if you include swimming in the mix, you can pretend to be even TOUGHER," and a triathlete was thus born. I probably won't get a chance to compete until next year, because I have a string of marathons planned for the fall, but I will be training. I just wanted to let you all know that I'm out there, furrowing my brow in a desperate attempt to understand your triathlon lingo and asking the occassional stupid question. Like this one: I'm supposed to replace my cables and housing for my bike's....shifter dealie....but see, I don't know what housing is. What is it?

Welcome!  Housing?  Maybe it's that little cover over top of the shifter dealie thing.  Really, I don't know, but your local bike shop (LBS) can help!

Good luck in your training, and really there are no stupid questions here.

Greetings and welcome. You will have a great base for your first tri with all your running and biking experience. The lingo thing will come in time. Just keep reading the threads and asking questions. Everyone here is helpful and encouraging no matter what !

Good luck with your running events this year!!!

Ron, I'm from Akron too. Sweet. Anyway, I've just got two marathons for the fall, but that's a "string" for me because it takes so long to recover and get ready for another (for me, at least). The first is the Towpath marathon, where I'm hoping for some sort of PR. Then 6 weeks later I'll run the Seattle marathon for fun (which is an excellent race if anyone finds themselves out that way in November). I have a handful of other races mixed in too, starting with the Boilermaker in three weeks, so the moral of the story is that this fall is focused on running.

just fyi, cable housing is that that tubing that the cables pass through. You usually find it coming out of your brakes, or going from your rear derailure (shifter thingie?) to your frame. You buy it longer than you need from a bike store, and then cut it to the desired length. Good luck

Thanks S. Take comfort in the fact that you've taken me one step closer to not using the word "dealie" anymore.
