1053 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Originally posted by navbtcret Thanks everyone, the race and crowds were amazing. I was cruising, having one of those great runs. I was feeling strong and having no issues right up until mile 22. Now I have never cramped up before racing until yesterday. I got one of those cramps in my left calf that wakes you up from your sleep out of nowhere just like sleeping and I was doomed after that. I had to stop and stretch it out several times over the last 4 miles. I even went into a med tent at about mile 23.5 to get some water and a banana, they wanted to keep me there but I would hear nothing of it so off I went again. I usually have a kick for the last half mile but none yesterday, it was all I could do to keep moving to the finish. I finished with a heavy limp but a big smile on my face. I am not disappointed at all either. I did exactly want I set out to do, run a sub 3:20 or blow trying and I went boom. It was also warmer than I would've liked but no excuses I was not prepared for that pace plain and simple so back to training and look for a summer marathon to try and get back to Boston next year. Thanks again for all your support and kind words. Day 880 was and I had 26.5 miles on my watch. Today 881, 1.6 recovery miles. I am back home as well. On another note my photo was on the front page of the Boston Globe on Monday, they took my photo Sunday and used it in their article about the marathon. I know it was not because of my good looks either, it was because on my red, white and blue beard. Great race. Those Newton hills are evil! Its great to cross the finish line knowing you didn't hold back, and any Boston finish is awesome. I hope to see you out there next year. #548- 4 mi easy again, may do one long run before my HIM in a week and a half, or may just extend my taper a bit and let my knee heal up a bit. |

1053 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Great beard! My bosses keep mine in check to some extent, but I may have to grow it out a bit more and perhaps follow suit in one of my upcoming races. Looks sharp! #549- 8 mi. Legs feel good, even after a tough 1:45 on the bike. Knee is not better but not worse. I could have run faster today, or even longer, but I am trying to play it smart. |

1439 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Thanks again all. After going over the race in my head I am sure I got dehydrated during the race which is what caused the cramping. Normally I go between mile 18-22 and have never made a whole marathon without having to go. well Monday I went about 45 minutes before I started and then did not go again until about 5 that evening. I drank my liter in my hand held and took water at most aide stations too so I thought I was doing well with it. I guess not, because I had 2 bottles of water right after finishing, a protein shake and Gatorade. Another water on the was back to the hotel and 5 beers plus a couple more glasses of water before I finally went. Enough about that, I still had a great time. Day 883, 6 miles. Brad I hope you are still hanging in there. |

I am hoping to get at least 115 miles completed in 24 hours. I really think that you just want to find your limit. Really, 115 miles in what a month from now? I don't know how you do it, I'm nervous about my 50 mile run 7 months from now. That said, I like this "If there is anything that you want special, shoot me an email and I'll try to make it happen," from the RD about the aid stations which already look good as is. I don't think I'd have any requests, but the fact that they put that offer out there is pretty cool. #551- 2 mi warmup before 3.5 hour bike. My run volume was down a bit this week, I missed my long run, but I got close to 10 hours on the bike in, I may just jump on for 25 minutes and spin a bit tomorrow just to get to an even 10 hours. |

Day 885, 8 miles. The legs are feeling real good. |

Even in the middle of this, it's important to have a small amount of time to yourself to help process things and also to hit the reset button. You need it. You and your family will be in my thoughts. |

My wife has been staying at the hospital with him. don't know how she holds it together so well, she is stronger then me. A close family friend had their daughter diagnosed with cancer at age 3. She had surgery and subsequent treatment, and is now cancer free. I did a charity ride for cancer with her dad awhile back, and having 2 young daughters close to that age, I had to ask him how he dealt with it. I couldn't imagine. He basically told me that you have no choice, you take one day at a time, and you do what you have to do. I'm not sure if that helps in any way, but it made sense when he told me. I wish your family strength in this trying time, and your son strength and resolve in dealing with his illness. |

Extreme Veteran 737 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? #69 and #70 - About three apiece at Cacapon State Forest near Berkeley Springs, WV. No matter where on the mountain you start, there's a mile straight up somewhere in your route. There are some boggy places to run through as well, but these are still fun trails to run. #71 - 2 fastish miles. The dog acquired a limp Saturday, so she has not run with me the last couple of days (her wrist is a little swollen but I'm not worried yet). It occurred to me yesterday morning that I haven't run alone in almost two years. I've had the dog or fellow racers every time. I hope running continues to be a comfort and that today is a successful start to treatment. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. |

1439 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Day 88 yesterday, 6 miles. I got to speak to a local running group of all women last night about running. I just spoke to them about setting goals and sticking to them whatever they may be. To have long term and short term running goals and to aim high. I also spoke a little about my running history. I am really glad they invited me to speak, I had a great time and got to run with a group of ladies after. This group is almost 200 strong and growing every year. Hard to believe that for the small town I live in. Hopefully I can speak to them again in a couple of years. I will definitely be running with some of them in the future. |
