I have never done a mass start in a tri but I agree with you it would be funner.

I raced Santa Cruz last Sept. and water temp was 57 degrees. I used a full wetsuit and thermal cap under age group cap. Stayed nice and toasty among the sharks! :-) 

I am not a huge fan of sleeveless, but you may want to try out both to find what you like best.

Yes, It's totally doable in sleeveless. Guess it kinda depends on what you can handle and your exposure time.  Your faster in full sleeves though. 

That is a pretty high estimate if you ask me.  It was in the 50s when I last raced IMSG.  I had a full on and thought the guys with booties and caps were wimps.  Boy did I regret not having those.  If it is windy and/or cold I would recommend the full, but I am from Vegas, so cold isn't my deal.  

I just took a ride on part of the bike course this weekend.  Unfortunately the weather was really horrible and I did not get to bike Snow Canyon but I did drive it.  Holy cow!  Snow canyon is going to be absolutely brutal on race day.  I can't believe all the turns going up, up, up.  We definitely need to plan to have a lot left in the tank at mile 40.

The run course is no joke either.  The elevation profile doesn't really do it justice.  This 70.3 will definitely be a challenge.  Forget about a PR...

The hills are not the challenge on this course. Train for hills and you're good.

What to expect at St. George 70.3 is to expect the unexpected. And expect that the only thing you can control that day is your attitude.

The St. George course is not the true challenge.The challenge of  St. George Ironman (and now Ironman 70.3)  each year is the conditions. Tough course plus extreme ( and sometimes unexpected, sudden) conditions.

I am doing it this year, will be my first HiM, I am from STG and I volunteered the last 2 years on the run course.

To me the hills aren't that bad (LOL ok I train on them all the time, I just did a portion of the bike out by hurricane and I was worried about the purgatory hill but that wasn't bad at all i still think the Snow Canyon hills are rougher).  The run course is brutal this year though ran it 2 weeks ago, its 4 miles up hill, then you drop down for 1.75 and then you turn around and go right back up for 1.75.  Then its a drop to the finish.  I didn't run the 2 mile detour through the golf course and just did 11 of the 13 so not sure how those miles are.

Conditions are what is going to make the difference, we can get some very nasty winds especially out at the start and in Hurricane (it has that name for a reason) and the heat can be way high in May.  I did STG marathon in 2011 and 2012 and in 2011 it was 95 by the finish and in 2012 it was like 75 with a nice tailwind for 7 miles, so every year is like a crap shoot to what conditions you might get.  we hit 80 this week so its getting warmer but a lot of time we will hit 80 and then drop back down to 50 and then back up to 90, its like a roller coaster.

Going to try and ride the whole course on the 30th and then run most of the course that day too.

Wave 10, still think a mass start would be fun. With the pros to, no head start let them fight it out with us Getting excited I should have a nice set of Enves for the race

Wave 7 for me.  Luckily I am not worried about the swim portion so the harder it is the better for me.

What makes me really happy is not that I am a good swimmer, but that I get to be on the bike course near the front and see all of the really nice TT bikes pass me like I am standing still. :D
