PSA:  As a local attorney and triathlete I am keenly aware of some of the most recent accidents we've had at IMFL.  We have one intersection on the BIKE course that despite having police in it directing traffic and signs/volunteers everywhere, it seems about 1-2 times every 2-3 years, a cyclist in the race is struck by a car. I have represented 3 of them in the past 3 years. Imagine the heartbreak of coming all this way, (one of clients was from Canada!) spending all the money and riding 100+ miles on the bike, only to be clipped by a car, ruin your bike and break an arm or clavicle. Race day over!

The intersection on the bike course is FRONT BEACH ROAD and Highway 79.  Assume we have idiots visiting/tourists and KEEP YOUR HEAD ON SWIVEL going through this and all intersections despite beach police controlling intersection. Don't assume it's all good even in a race as well run as this one. Just my PSA for the day!  Our local community is very proud to host this event each year and want it safe for all.

Exactly! The area will be full of tourists that week who have NO idea of a big race going on. They're just trying to get to Walmart and then back to the water! Like it's going to dry up before they can get to it. Just be safe is all- WE've worked with local Law Enforcement and the bach chamber to provide even MORE signs/ electric/blinking signs making people aware of what's going on. Otherwise, this is a great race venue, safe course, hopefully perfect weather and conditions, the water is usually GREAT that time of year etc.

Yes, again, it probably won't be an issue at all and hopefully not, but even when everyone is doing everything "right" (race officials, law enforcement, signs etc) some drivers just don't get it. I'm sure this same advice would go for anytime, anywhere, but i've personally dealt with these multiple crashes in these races at the SAME spot/place.
