Does anyone use a rowing machine to build upper body strength?  I'm considering purchasing a Concept 2 rower.  I've heard good things about these.

I absolutely LOVE my Concept 2.

I'll agree that I find it an excellent lower body workout.  I'm all wobbly-like when done.  That surprised me when I first started doing it.

But - I find that my lats, especially, get worked from finishing the stroke.  Accentuated more when I'm doing a workout that's either intervals or sprints than LSD work.

Personally, I think it's about as good an overall body workout you can get.  YMMV.

On the rowing machine, do you go for speed ? I've used a rowing machine in the past but never got much results, but then again maybe I just wasn't on long enough

Sorry for the late post on this.  I absolutely love the Concept2 rowing machine and we've posted lots of workouts on our website that will get you on and off the machine to build upper- and lower-body strength.  We'd love for you to head over to our workouts page and try them out!

For upper body training I would also take a hard look at the Concept2 SkiErg.  It works on the same flywheel principle as the rower but it's more upper-body focused (although it's also total-body just as the rower is).

The SkiErg is also great because you can add the Halo Swim Kit Adapter to it for dryland swim training.  The adapter was developed in coordination with Sheila Taormina, a world champion triathlete and Olympic gold medal swimmer, specifically with triathletes and competitive swimmers in mind.  There's a video about it with Sheila here if you're interested in seeing more.

Hope that helps, and if I can answer any questions, just let me know!

I had one years ago, loved it, but started to develop problems with my knees from it.  We have them at the Y so I row every now and then for old time sakes!
