I sent my bike to Idaho yesterday for IMCDA, after assurances that my LBS had a great road bike to loan me for the next week until I leave.  I went to pick the loaner up today and almost crapped my pants...not exactly my 2005 Cannondale R700. Circa 1970s Araya Road Bike with down-tube shifters, toe cages, completely bald tires, and LOTS of rust. Not sure this thing is even safe to ride.  I have 3 rides left...one tomorrow, one Tuesday, and one Wednesday.  May be taking the Electra out.

Wow, I'd hate to see what a "less than great road bike" looks like...

I'm sure its ok to ride, try it and see how it goes. If its that bad, then ride Electra.

And yes, think how nice (and fast) your bike will be at CDA!

I had Suntour shifters in 1984.  Ahh, what a year - but I digress.  Do you remember how to use those downtube shifters?

I'd be saying "Adios" to that bike shop.  And I'd let them know about it.  And that I'd be spreading the word too.  Well, at least it's worth what you paid for it.

I've had more than one of these nice little episodes with this bike shop....going back to my very first bike purchase last year when they had me stand over the top tube of the Raleigh and said "Yep...it fits."  I didn't know better at that time.  Then when I went in to buy my Cannondale at the end of last year, I wanted to test ride a couple bikes...they said they only allow test rides on the trainer.  I should have walked out and driven the 200 miles to a real bike shop in San Antonio!

It is the only bike shop within 25 miles...and the next closest one is the same way.  Makes me wonder if there is enough of a market to open a REAL LBS down here and make a living?

I would think so...there is definitely room for it. How many real cyclists are down there? They don't have to just be triathletes!

About the bike:

Are they charging you for this loaner?

I'm going against everyone here and am going to say at least they gave you a bike to borrow. Most shops don't do that. I'd be thankful and take what they give me.

Lots of real cyclists...the only problem is that most of them are so used to years of crappy service that they already order everything from Nashbar, Performance, etc, etc.  It's like the running joke around town that we have a bike shop and yet 80% of the cyclists order everything online.  Might be hard to break that trend, and the expense of a brick and mortar would be pretty high.

And I agree with you Haley...it was a nice gesture on their part, and I'm not complaining...I just found it really funny that with all the bikes they have had go through there, they couldn't find something more "current" to use as their loaner.  And it was free, so beggars can't be choosers!

Hmm, if you open a good shop in the RGV, naturally you're going to need to organize some great rides and races out of it... Texas BT Road Trip!

Remember that "Brandt's Race" half-iron we were all concocting in January?

Hey, wait a minute!

I just ran down to my garage to check and make sure my bike was still there.  Looks just like mine!

Good luck at IMCDA!
