Regular 107 Thousand Oaks | Subject: Using Iphone During Race Do the majority of you train with music with you run or bike as I do? If you do, when you race what do you do? Ipod? Iphone? Other? I train with my iphone and use it for everything including Digifit which integrates with TrainingPeaks. When used with my Bluetooth Polar it makes everything incredibly easy and I can share the data with my coach, literally in real time. On top of that I have a pandora station that I've spent a year perfecting that I listen to as well. From what I've read, in most Tri's you can't use an Iphone but I could be wrong. I kind of planned to get my music, BPM, and everything else I need. Do any of you used an Iphone during the race? |

Early I used music for running but after a few weeks ditched it-found it one more thing to fuss with and distracting. I will use music on the trainer. |

Regular 198 Costa Mesa | Subject: RE: Using Iphone During Race I carry my Samsung with me on the bike when I'm out on a workout, but only use it for GPS when I'm hopelessly lost after a wrong turn somewhere. When I trained for marathons/half marathons I used to run with an ipod, but since I can't swim with one, it's not safe to cycle with one, and I cannot wear one during the run, I don't use it anymore. I play songs in my own head during the swim, too busy with bike handling during the cycle, and occasionally break out in karaoke during runs XD |

Extreme Veteran 930 Fort Worth, TX | Subject: RE: Using Iphone During Race As previously stated, most races will not allow you to listen to a music device during the event. I will run with an ipod on an occasional true off-road trail run, but I don't when I'm on the road. I never use one when cycling - it's just too dangerous to not be able to hear traffic, or other cyclists coming through. People that wear them on the main biking/running trail system we have here cause alot of problems when they take the middle of the lane trail and have their music up too loud to hear others. In the gym, I think it is a huge benefit I love music, but I like to be able to hear when I am at risk of cars, others, coming up on me. |

I usually have my phone on the bike, and often on the run. But I'm not using it, I just like to have it in case of emergency, although I have started a tracker app for the bike before.

Pro 5892 , New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Using Iphone During Race Not allowed for all the reasons already explained. Let me give a personal story... In a race, right after T2, I was closing in a person in front of me fairly quick. I called "out on your left" (yes, I do that even when running, not only on the bike...). The person stepped out right in front of me and we both tumbled down. Luckily no one was seriously hurt. He blurted out "I couldn't hear you" and yes, he had headphones on listening to his iPod. Today, when I see a runner with headphones on in a race that clearly states that it's illegal, I brace myself for the impact, I will call out "n your left", but I won't change my line. Veteran 1384 Panama City, FL | Subject: RE: Using Iphone During Race USAT sanctioned races forbid listening devices during race- All races i've done it's a DQ for using ipod, iphone, anything to listen in your ears at any time on course- even during run. There are usually good reasons for this. I NEVER wear headphones on bike- unless on trainer in my garage. |

It can vary by race, but is more common to be one of 3 strikes for various infractions. So not necessarily a straight up DQ, but do a few things and it will be part of getting a DQ. Drafting/positioning fouls are the varying time penalties. I believe they also count as one of the strikes. |

Member 39 Ft. Myers, FL | Subject: RE: Using Iphone During Race It blows my mind that people would consider wearing headphones on a bike. I see it out on the bike paths, mostly with "recreational" riders. They are usually not wearing a helmet either. I feel like cycling is dangerous enough without cutting off one of your valuable senses to the outside world. In Florida, it is against the law to ride a bike with headphones/headset on, but I'm sure it is seldom enforced. I wear headphones occasionally when I run, but more and more I don't. It is just one more thing to mess with and wear, on top of my pepper spray (mostly for dogs), Garmin, sweatband, Road Id, and flashers. I run in the early morning in the dark, so it is already sort of unsafe, I like to be able to hear if a car is coming or the jingle of a dog collar. If I wear headphones, I only put one in. |

I double checked after posting that before and you're right. However, I have seen it not be clear about an immediate penalty in some races, and there is the strikes. WTC is one who tends to make it unclear as they'll have the infractions listed, but may or may not say anything more than "penalty". ETA: That is, it's just listed as a penalty, not as a "variable time penalty". It's been brought up that they leave out the strikes part sometimes as well, so the only thing left would be to assume that it's a DQ (which it isn't, not an outright DQ anyway). Mark Ouch. That being said, I don't mind running with some music from time to time, especially if I'm stuck on the treadmill. However, NEVER on the bike and rarely on outdoor runs. I bring my phone with me for a number of the reasons already given (get lost, flat tire, hurt, bonk, etc).

I constantly startle people when I approach from behind and they are wearing earbuds. After running behind them for several minutes and saying "good evening" or "Hi!" And I weigh 198 lbs. |

Veteran 740 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: Using Iphone During Race Don't a lot of the pro bike races let the riders wear radios now? I thought a few years ago a lot of the pro teams were protesting when the radios were banned, claiming that the radios make the race safer. Granted, they're not listening to music....but the distraction is still there along with the decreased ability to hear what's going on around them. They've got the hazards of othr riders and all the team / support / race cars when they're out of the peleton, but they still seem to get by. I know it's kind of an apples and oranges comparison. I don't wear headphones on the bike, but I wouldn't ride any different if I did. It's probably a little safer without, but only a little bit. Of all the unsafe and crazy things I see people doing on their bikes these days, I don't think headphones or music is anywhere near the top of the list of things that the bike community needs to deal with these days. |

Let me make a guess... most people in the race don't put 25-35k km on their bikes each year and hasn't raced in large groups for years... And it's only in the highest race radios are allowed. Riding with music is just plain stupid (so ok, I said exactly how I feel about it). You're many times safer if you can hear everything around you and it's not about distraction from the music... it's about being able to hear everything to reduce the risk of being the victim of the many inattentive people on the road. |
