When I hear the word iron, I tend to think of weights and bodybuilding. Wouldn't Enduroman (or woman) be more appropriate?

Nope...it's got more than 25 years of tradition.  I like it!  Enduroman sounds like one of those phony TV challenge crap programs.

Well, I suppose iron could refer to the iron will to train hard and finish strong.

so much for that idea...

for your comfort - there's quite a few training tapes out there titled "Ironman" and starring (who'd have guessed?) Arnold.

i'm not certain if it's worse to be associated with the Gubernator or a caped Enduro fighter.

i, for one, never liked the "Ironman" title. we're just people who swim, bike and run a lot. nothing 'iron' about it.

Ironman is a great, no doubt about it, but perhaps he needs a little healthy competition. Enduroman might not be the right guy for the job, but someone has to be. Maybe that someone will do something bold like, maybe, double the swim...ooh

Maybe Carbon-Titanium instead of old-fashioned Iron.

(I know, Carbon is "C" and Calcium is "Ca", but CTi doesn't really work.)

So, what I'm getting from this is that triathletes like to think of themselves as superheroes. Maybe I'll wear a cape this weekend then...just hope it doesn't get snagged on my chain.

No capes!

Do you remember Thunderhead? Tall, storm powers? Nice man, good with kids.
November 15th of '58! All was well, another day saved, when? his cape snagged on a missile fin!

Stratogale! April 23rd, '57! Cape caught in a jet turbine!

Metaman, express elevator! Dynaguy, snag on takeoff! Splashdown, sucked into a vortex!

No capes!

Hilarious!

To the OP, read Iron Will.  Hint, it's not about a guy named Will who's made out of iron.

Another way to look at it is to use the Super Bowl.  Is there another name for it that would sound cooler?  Probably.  Will it ever be changed?  No.  Why?  Brand identification and people like it.

Now, thats quite funny.

I know someone who call's it Ironperson. It just sounds wrong to hear it being called anything other than IRONMAN.

I know at least one female IMer who takes offense to calling it something else.  Her response?  "I'm an Ironman.  I finished the same damn course the men did."

I was thinking of The Incredibles when I wrote that....hence, the snagged part. I love that movie and you don't have to be a kid. The toons are better than the real movies these days.

Let's start a pool -- $$$ goes to whoever wears a cape during a triathlon -- picture proof required, of course.

Oh yeah and I'm shocked the feminists haven't jumped all over Ironman yet. Although, it is a brand name so they can go, well, you know....off somewhere.

In the original races, the finishing trophy was a hand-made stick figure made with metal on a block of wood. They called it the "hole in the head" trophy because the little man's head was a bolt with the hole facing forward. I think the term "Ironman" came briefly before the trophy was created, but being made of metal, it was probably a good representation of the word.

There are also bodybuilding competitions called Ironman.

This is referenced in Iron Will which is why I suggested it earlier.  I guess I could have expanded my comment to include this, thank you for being more clear than I was.

If you want to shock people or want to start a spamfest, take the post to trinewbies.com. That place is anarchy. People here understand respect.

Eduroman -- uh, not for me. I like Atomic Man.

NOPE.....Ironman it is.  Times may change, and certain standards MUST remain.  And don't even get the silly idea of suggesting IronPerson.
