Ok so I'm trying to make a decision here. The end of cycling season is fast approaching in my area and that means the deals on cycling gear and bikes are coming. I recently acquired a Triathlon bike which has in turn infected me with the cycling gear bug.  Now I'm having a hard time deciding what I want to get next. keep in mind both of these things will likely be bought before next season but I'm trying to decide which to get next. I can either buy a new Road Bike or a set of aero wheels next month. Complicating factors in this decision are that my tri bike is a 650C wheel bike, so I won't be able to share the wheels between them. I'd like to get a road bike so next season I can start going on group rides in my area. However, aero wheels are just straight up cool, but unfortunately I won't won't be able to swap them between bikes.

So, do I get a 'new' road bike (probably more like lightly used) or do I get a fancy set of aero wheels (also more than like lightly used)? what would you get first?

If you're going to get both by the start of next season, then wait on the wheels and get the road bike now, so you can ride it through the winter. I'm assuming you wouldn't be riding the aero wheels as daily trainers...

it really all depends on how you train and what your final goal is.  If you would like to do a lot of group rides- and there's a group that will really challenge you, then getting out there and riding hard more often is going to make a much bigger difference in your cycling race times than a set of wheels.  Yeah- wheels are cool, but when race season approaches, you can pick up a decent front aero wheel for a few hundred bucks and put a wheel cover on the rear.

so- I guess I'm suggesting that if a road bike is what you need... get a road bike.  there are always time for 'refinements' in your race steed later.

Grab a set of 35s and meet me at Rausch Creek.

Road bike, I personally don't like only having a tri bike for training. Aero wheels are for race day only, especially if you get 650Cs since most affordable carbon 650Cs are tubular (flats will cost about $60). I got two 650 sets of race wheels last winter for $400 off slowtwitch; two front 404's, one rear 404, and one rear renn disc.

Easy - get a road bike.   Then you can enjoy the pain and suffering of roadie rides all winter long.

If you run short of money for aero wheels just get a used front (or a Flo or something less expensive) and a disc cover for the back.
