To answer your question, for a sprint I would worry about stoping weight training 3 weeks prior to your race. You can back off and go to a lower weight so you don't feel as sluggish. That comment was directed more at long course (IM and HIM ) athletes as they taper longer for their events. IMO weight training helps to prevent injury and stregthens key muscle groups. Think about it this way, with stronger quads, glutes, and calves your run and bike are going to improve. Shoulders, chest, biceps, triceps, and lats are going to make your swim better.
