Subject: Neighborhood Dog Rant

Dogs in our neighborhood bark. A lot. And I'm usually fine with it. They'll start barking when coyotes howl, and then calm down. Luckily, Duke rarely participates.

Tonight, I hear a little dog barking, eventually, I heard it right outside my living room window. My dog ran out the back door and got into a barking war through the fence. I brought Duke inside, and the dog wandered off. After about a half hour of constant barking later, I went outside. I saw another neighbor walking her dogs, and asked her if she knew who the loose dog belonged to. She pointed out the house and said it gets out pretty often. I herded the dog in that general direction, and got him on their property. At this point, someone saw me from the windows and turned all of the inside and outside lights off - except the TV. I went inside and I called animal control. No one was on duty to stop by, but they promised to note the complaint and come by later to talk to the owner about leash laws, noise ordinances, etc.

15 minutes later (45 total), the boyfriend goes out. Comes back in to report that the dog is just standing in the middle of the street, barking endlessly. My dog was anxious and whining by this point.

After a solid hour of barking, the boyfriend and I grab treats, and decide to go lure the dog in, and just call the number on it's tag until the owner comes out. I wasn't 100% sure of the house, so I didn't want to knock on the door. We ended up herding the dog onto the property again, and the owner's daughter came to the door. She called for her dad and he came out. The conversation went something like this:

Me: Is this your dog?

Him: Yes. He's an a-hole.

Me: He's been barking in the street for over an hour.

Him: I know. We've been trying to get him back inside

(um, no you haven't)

Me: Well, he's been on my property, and there are a lot of dogs in this neighborhood. It's not really safe to have a loose dog on the street.

Him: Don't you think I know that? Get the f*$& off of my property.

I did. We stood and watched until they herded the dog back in the front door.

I came back home to look up dog laws. A big fear of mine is that Duke and I encounter an unleashed dog while on a walk, and Duke harms the dog, and then gets put down as a result. Luckily, a provoked dog won't be prosecuted. So, generally, Duke is safe.

And my neighbor? Well, I learned that a dog at large is a Class 2 Misdemeanor in my city. Guess who will be calling the police instead of animal control next time?

Why do these people even have a dog? Who treats people like that in front of their children?

There are a lot of sick people in this world.

I'm sorry you had to see that.

I'm really sorry for the dog.

I love dogs. I love somewhat fewer people. This is a prime example why.

i don't understand why some people even bother to get dogs either.  the couple across the street just ties the dog off to their front steps and leaves her out there howling for hours at a time (and she is a bassett hound, she can HOWL!)  they never ever walk her and then wonder why she's overweight.  poor pups, wish i could rescue them all, but i can't handle more than the 2 i have!

I can relate 100% and have had some major issues with 2 dogs who live across the street from me. I have called police, animal control and finally went to the village clerk who listed the dogs as "dangerous dogs", fined them and they had a visit from the Mayor (not sure what that does but there it is). We live in a very little town. The owners keep their dogs on an electric collar but it does not keep them home regularly.

The dogs have charged at my kids walking down the sidewalk, run circles in our yard and barked at the house, us, kids anything at all, nipped at my husband going to mailbox, stood in our yard barking at my husband while he is on the roof hanging Christmas lights, attacked my own dog in our yard with my 3 year old daughter standing 50 feet away, charged at a women going for a walk carrying a toddler. They called animal control that time (someone besides us finally) and you know what the owners did- claimed they did not own the dog. Sick.

So yes, I can relate. Barking would be the least of my worries at this point. And guess what, the dogs are STILL outside all day with nothing but the electric fence to monitor them. Oh, and after we complained to the Village the owners sent us a letter trying to blame the dogs behavior on our kids saying they have been seen growling and throwing rocks at the dogs. Umm, lets see, what is a small child supposed to do when being cornered by a dog? What kind of person does not take responsibility for their dogs and then tries to blame it on a little kid? I still remember the first time I saw the dogs were aggressive. My son was two and one of the dogs cornered him up against the side of our house - he was screaming for help in our own freaking yard. And you want to blame that on a little kid.

Ok - I've got to stop because this topic really makes my blood boil.

Good luck to you, sorry for the additional rant! It can really impact your quality of life so I really understand your frustration.

Poor poor dog. Clearly someone went out and got the dog and didn't tell the husband.  I'd have offered to take him off his hands.  Just no reason for him to be rude to you.  I can't imagine what he does to the dog.

And its good karma that you looked out for that dog. After many times of my dog figuring out how to escape from our yard (we had chicken wire dug into the ground, and he still would dig under!) I believe its my duty to corral all loose dogs, even long after his passing.

In a perfect world I wish you could just scoop up the poor little guy and find him a loving home to be in. That owner is a major azz, I feel really bad for his children, God knows what they are put thru

I woulda said something like "once you keep your dog off mine, I'll keep off yours" or some such.

Frustrating

Next time remove the collar from the dog and then take him to the local shelter.  Dog would probably be better off and I doubt the owner would go looking for him.

This happened to a dog on the next street over from me. Got out multiple times - I had it in my yard a few times trying to locate an owner (NO TAGS) - it escaped once and I took it back home once when I figured out where it lived. I heard the first time it had been taken to the shelter  - owners paid their $50 to get it back, but the second time they didn't bother.

Poor poor dog. Clearly someone went out and got the dog and didn't tell the husband.

I'm confused by this comment & what it has to do with the situation. You mean the Dad doesnt like the dog so someone got it (wife or kid) without asking him? If that's what you mean, you don't have a basis for that comment.

Maybe his kid wanted the dog and he got it. Maybe the wife said, "no, we shouldn't get a dog, its another thing I have to take care of" and the Dad didn't train it. Or the kid is too young to really take care of it and dad isn't home enough to make a difference in the behavior.

This situation is terrible. I don't know what I'd do (I like the police option). I do like the 'take the dog' situation and find it a rescue. If there's a no kill shelter, maybe one of those, as animal control will take it to the pound They definitely do not need to be dog owners.

It sounded to me like the man of the house (I shortened it to husband) didn't seem pleased to have a dog (he's an a-hole is the response?) I've seen this several times where one spouse wants one and the other does not.  Who cares what the basis is? its a poor owner no matter what the case is.  I'm not sure why this would be a nitpicked statement.  The tragedy of the situation is that it is an unwanted dog, regardless, and one that will end up on the street yet again.

Sadly, it's about the "it's all about 'ME' and how special 'I' am" culture we have now ... our society is dominated by selfish, entitled people who think that their situation is special and unique. it's seems that having BASIC concern for other people is out of vogue and that's a shame.

I've had so many dogs chase me and when I ask the owner to call thier dog away from me they do so in such a half hearted manner I have started to ask just once. If there is the typical 'he wont bite. He's friendly. He's a puppy' comment or lack of common courtesy of stopping thier dog from chasing/jumping on me I simply keep running. Usually they start panicing that I'm 'running off with thier dog.' I have had 2 dogs this summer follow me all the way home, where I give them a bowl of water and call animal control.

Zanne.

I'm pretty sure that bad neighbors and dogs running freely in neighborhoods have been around as long as neighbors and neighborhoods.
