Subject: Hydration/storage for long rides...

I'm curious as to how you guys are setting up your bikes for long rides. Hydration, storage, nutrition, etc...I'd like to know what you guys are doing for hydration mostly. On my bike I can only fit one bottle on the cage. I was thinking about the speed-fill setup (40 oz bottle on down tube with straw.) and was wondering what the pros and cons were.

Thanks, guys...

Never mind...Google is my friend. And coincidentally it led me to a bunch of threads on here. I'm going with the TorHans 30. I used my USAT discount, plus the $20.00 saving code I got for renewing and ended up with a total savings of $31.00. Plus, I get to pick it up at the local TriSports so no shipping either.

It seems like the best setup for what I'm looking for...and according to TorHans, I'm even more aero

First four hours:  Small CamelBak, Bento Box with 2 whole Wheat Bagel Thins with 1/2 serving PB each cut up into two (~102 cals each), small bottle with 8 markings in pen covered over with tape to prevent smudging with 4 scoops Perpetuem.  Comes out to about 237.5 calories per hour for me.  I take the solid (and it's pretty much 100 calories of any solid I want, gels, bars, food, etc.), then at 20 minutes into the hour 1/4 serving Perpetuem, then at 4 minutes into the hour another 1/4 serving Perpetuem.

So the CamelBak, 1 water bottle, and Bento box for the first four hours.  I have another water bottle with water that I start into when I get into the fifth hour and I have gels into the Bento box, I like to switch over into only gels (at the top of the hour and at the middle of the hour) for longer rides and I have pill tubes with servings of a caloric drink of whatever I'm into at the moment (100 calories) to put into the water if I want to lay off solids/gels.

So two water bottles, a CamelBak, and a Bento Box get me through 6 hours.

The Torhans got bad reviews on Amazon by the way.

I like the Torhans except for two things. If you use the quick fill lid then liquid can vibrate out. This can be solved with some sort of sponge like some of the other bottles have. The other issue is that the straw holder can come loose on rough roads. A dab of silicone can help keep it in place. Even with those issues I'm very happy with it. The mount works much better than the rubber bands on other brands, at least for me.

I have two cages, but one of them stores my repair kit. I have a profile aero bottle rubber-banded to the aerobars, and I have one regular bottle in the remaining cage.  Nutrition goes in a pocket or sometimes taped to the frame.  Once those get low, I plan to ride past my car or to a convenience store.

Do they have drive-through?

I use a Camelbak. Holds enough for anything.

I have 1 bottle between the bars and that's it.

For long rides I have another in my jersey, and a 7oz. flask of gel.

It's easy to refill the bottles at a park I pass (gas stations and garden hoses work too).  I also carry a $20 in my saddle bag if I needed some food at a gas station or 7-11.

I have on older PD aero bottle, then I have one bottle on the downtube and an xlab with 2 gorilla bottle holders on it.  So I can have at least 4 hours of liquid on me at a time.  The good thing about training like that is come race day your bike is a heck of a lot lighter than the training rides ; )
