Inspired by the "other" HTFU thread going on right now, what are your memorable HTFU moments?

Mine is a female athlete at Kona (2006?), who was the returning champion, had appendicitis and made it to mile 16 on the run before calling it quits.

More recently, Angela Naeth at 70.3WC was pretty tough:

I recall a female competitor at Kona a few years ago who crashed on her bike two weeks before the race.  She had all kinds of road rash and even a partially torn pec, but competed regardless.  I think she did pretty well in that race too, if I remember correctly...

Or do you want our own HTFU moments?

“It was in a room that was 12 by 12,” Navy Seal Sr. Chief Mike Day said. “The gunfight was initially started by them shooting the rifle out of my hands. I pulled out my pistol and got into it with four dudes. I was shot 27 times, 16 to the body and 11 to my body armor.”

Here's another, I can't think of or find his name right now but a few years back there was an AGer at Kona who had his bike trashed in a collision with a media vehicle. He walked like seven miles in his bare feet with his bike carried over his shoulder until he got to T2. Then, of course, he did the marathon.

Jan 2, 1994 - Emmitt Smith separated his shoulder just before halftime but led the Cowboys to a win over the Giants in the final game of the season to secure the division title. A running back, with a separated shoulder, 229 all purpose yards, 41 yards on the winning drive in OT.

And I hate the Cowboys.

At the Xterra race I did a few weeks ago...

A guy destroyed his tire 8 miles or so into the 15 mile bike. He ran the bike the rest of the bike course while pushing his bike, got to T2 dead last, and put on his running shoes and went out for the 5 mile run.

+1

That's a name that most will recognize instantly.... but, I couldn't tell you, for the life of me, who it was that won that race. Her 2nd place is the greatest, ever.

At my first HIM called the Pigman.  I had about three miles before I was done with the bike when I slowed to ask a biker what was up as she was walking/jogging her bike.  She said flat tire.  I offered to drop my spare tube and she said she didn't have a pump.  I said I would drop it ahead also.  She said no because she had two flats and I only had one tube and no patch kit.  Neither of us were anywhere close to being in the top 25 of our division.  She said thanks anyway and asked me to just ride on and finish.  I got off my bike and noticed the severe hip pain as I dismounted.  Put on my shoes and headed out of T2 and couldn't run but could walk with minimal pain, so I started out that way thinking it would get better.  It never did, so I walked 13.1 to finish.  But about 4 miles into my 13.1, here comes the girls I offered to help and she goes flying by like I was standing still.  OK, I probably was moving very slowly compared to here run.  She got to the turn around and was headed back and said thanks for the offer.  She was amazing!!!

Several of my cycling friends still say "Hoogerland the F up" instead of Harden....

Team Hoyt.

Being from the Boston area I've seen them in person a few times along the route and read multiple articles in the local papers on their quests for years.  Absolute inspiration.

Should that moment be counted as "Juiced the "F" up?

being pretty new to the sport my most memorable HTFU moment was when I crossed the finish line at my 1st triathlon. I have come a long way since then but when things get hard, I think back to how I barely made it across the finish line of that first race and it inspires me to keep on trucking.

Chad went on to finish that 35 minute moto and actually score points.  Dude is a Bad mofo.  He has also raced in the past with a dislocated shoulder among other things.

I've had some hard moments. And I've had some absolute disasters. I confess I don't follow the pros, so there isn't much in the racing social world that I'm aware of.

I had five flat tires in my first tri (a half iron). Quitting never crossed my mind. I bummed tubes and co2 off other riders and finished the fracking race. It just made me more determined to come back and get better.

In my last stand alone marathon, my knees hurt, my back hurt, and my ribs were hurting so bad that I was near tears just trying to take a breath. Facing one last hill, my pacer looked at me and asked if I like Star Wars. I said yes, and he said "This isn't the hill you're looking at!" Complete with the jedi hand wave. It gave me enough to laugh and finish. I later found out that he had a stress fracture in his knee prior to even starting the marathon. He showed up with his knee taped - talk about a htfu.

To be honest though - none of the crazy/stupid/painful things I've chosen to do compares to any of the things that I or others have had to live through. My friend is raising her two teenage boys by herself now because her husband was killed in the line of duty. She doesn't get to dnf. Another two friends (both triathletes ) are on the tail end of battling breast cancer. (eta both are doing better) They don't get to dnf either. So when things get tough, I remember that I chose this, put a smile on my face, and enjoy what I'm doing.

Watching a 9 yr old student in my daughter's class with CP finish a mile run and having every kid standing by on the side of track cheering him on. Never have seen someone dig deeper.
