Chrissie was in the boat this morning that followed out the female pros. She was cheering them on like crazy. Cynner39 and I are here now! We flew in yesterday. We are volunteering at the mile 1/9 aid station on the run starting in about 30 minutes! I can't even describe what this place is like right now. Words can't do it. Anyone has the chance to be here for this event should! Casual runners are still running up and down Alii Drive. It's getting pretty hot here 87 and Hawaii humid at 10:30. This run is going to get hot fast. So excited to see the leaders come past!!!!

Macca dropped out a couple years ago because of a broken chain. He just dropped out instead of waiting to have it fixed. He'd rather have a DNF than 50th place - bad sportsmanship and very childish if you ask me.

When pro athletes drop out during a race because of issues, it's not due to wanting to DNF instead of finishing 50th, it's usually about saving your energy so you can recover faster and start training for the next race.

If you want to get paid, you've gotta get results. Why waste all of that effort on something that won't literally pay off when you can get yourself in a better place for the next race?

I think she didn't pass quickly enough after entering the drafting zone.

He's a pro.  What good does slogging away for 50th place mean to him?  Save his body for another day.  I do think it's cool when some pros carry on after a tough crash or mechanical, but I think it's far from bad sportsmanship or childish for them to call it a day when they are out of the money.

ETA: In other words, what ratherbeswimming said.

Quitting a race because you've lost the prize money seems like the definition of bad sportsmanship, but that's just my opinion.

On the one hand he should finish because it's the antithesis of Ironman to unit period.

On the other hand. If you make your living doing this and could cause some physical inability to compete again in the next race, then maybe it's ok...

It might be, even to me, if it were a sport where you can be one of the best and still barely make enough money to live above the poverty line.

Hour for hour, mostly training, but also pounding the pavement to serve their sponsors, almost inevitably for a charity as well, travel, homestays, additional job ... pro triathletes work harder than almost any other kind of pro athlete.

I wonder if pros affix this same romanticism to finishing.  Some probably do.  I mentioned Angela Naeth in another thread finishing after a wicked crash.  But I would wager a bet that many just want the intense pain inflicted on their bodies to stop after they are completely out of contention.

Marino DOES look SMOOOOTH - he's cruzin though! yum.

I can't imagine running in that heat... how do you think the athletes who live/train in cooler areas prepare for that?
