Subject: 26.2 to 50k?
So I finished Chicago Marathon last week and feel nicely recovered. Have taken week off from running. If the weather holds am going to run 12 to 15 tomorrow. There is a 50k here on 10/27/12. My training up to Chicago had long runs of 18, 20, 22 then the 26.2. Is it unreasonable to give the 50k a shot? Especially if i do run/walk? Note: I am definitely mid to back of pack, not blazing speed and run just to have fun and finish.I am leaning to go for it, depending how my run goes tomorrow---Thoughts from the brain trust?

Give it a try! If you got through a marathon a few weeks prior without huge soreness issues, you shouldn't have any major problem with the 50k. I'd suggest starting at a slower pace than your marathon and seeing what happens. If you walk some, so what? You'll still have a great time. All 50k races will have a lot of middle and back of the pack people walking at least some of the time.

Most 50k's will have a really different feel than one of the mega marathons.......a much more supportive and friendly environment. I bet you'll have a blast. After my first trail 50k, I realized I'd MUCH rather do these smaller trail races than the big road marathons. The overall race experience is much more satisfying!

Is the 50K a trail run?  If so, how much trail running do you do?

Assuming the marathon training has been similar to the 50K terrain, you've done enough to have a good day.  There are a lot of ultra runners who run 50/100 mile events on back-to-back weekends, so having 3 weeks between the marathon and 50K shouldn't be a big issue (although...the strategy for back-to-back events is different than a single marathon)

The Ultra will be all about pacing yourself and time on your feet. The 50k on the 27th is definitely attainable. I attempted a 65k in Sep with hardly any training but bailed at the 32 mile mark because my feet were screaming after 6 hours of running through some mountains. My longest run prior to that this year was a 20 miler in August and before that just half marathons from a HIM in June.

You should go for it - best of luck!

Thanks all.  The race is on a multi-use asphalt trail here along lake Michigan.  Flat.  In fact the same Lakefront Path is where I did most of my long runs training for Chicago.  As it turns out however, it seems I have a conflict that morning anyway, so cant do the race.  But thanks for the info.

Too bad the Chicago 50/50 is a great race.  I wish I was in better shape I would done it again in a heartbeat.
