Ice. Stretch. Don't run. Hope and pray it all works out on race day.

Good luck!

My best friend did IM Melbourne with a nearly snapped achilles all advice to not do it but she did it and it held.  Stretch stretch stretch, ice ice ice and get it strapped/taped by a professional the night before the race.

Sucks that you strained it so close, were you tapering much?

Good news is that you likely got your peak as hard as you could manage.

Loads of ice ice ice, and nsaids,  rest,  stretching,  and get it TAPED UP before the event.

If it bugs you too much pull out, last thing you want to do is make that injury worse just to finish.

Not sure what type of strain you have but have you tried rolling out your calf with a lacross ball. I just finished my IM build for IMFL and the last 2 weekend I developed a very sore and tight achilles in the evening after my 110mi bike and 6mi run brick.

I rolled the trigger points deep in the muscle for a few minutes the next morning and got in 17mi run pain free.

So I went from barely being able to walk at 8am Sunday to running 17mi at 5pm and have no issues after.

Most achilles issues start from the calf.

FYI- dont Ice or use nsaids, they will actually slow you bodys natural recovery.

Get your self to a massage therapist today!!!  Hopefully it is more associated with the attached muscles being tight.

I had a similar experience that turned out well, so don't lose hope.  Six days before the Chicago Marathon I hurt my Achilles so bad I couldn't walk.  I got treatment from a local sports medicine/chiropractor the next day, spent the rest of the week with ice and staying off my feet as much as possible, and ran a PR on Sunday!  I'd have someone look at it right away.

Good luck - I hope this turns out well for you.

As others have said, chiropractor, massage, and self massage.  One of the issues with the Achilles and other tendons, from what I have read, is that they generally have lower blood flow to them, thus making the healing process slower.  (I am no doctor, so I may be butchering what I've read)  I find that in addition to getting worked on by my chiropractor and a massage, frequently self massaging the area helps.  I'm thinking this helps get blood flow to the area and speeds up recovery.  For my Achilles, a swim seems to also help.  Perhaps under the same theory.  Good luck.

Find a PT that does dry needling and have him work on the trigger points in the calf.  Massage is great but needling is much more effective and longer lasting.
