bootygirl - 2012-10-21 2:09 PM How about dying there hair, either just to cover gray or to Chang the color completely?

my husband once dyed his hair just for fun (i think his hairstylist talked him into it) and it looked fantastic.  he's not gray (yet!)  he can go gray when it happens or color his hair, who cares?  i'm just thrilled he stopped growing his sideburns long.

Unless you are a rock star I would avoid it.  Recently a guy at work (51 yo) came in with diamond stud earrings in both ears.  You would not believe the way people make fun of him.  You wouldn't believe what customers and clients say about him to other employees either.  They all think he has lost his mind.  Of course this is a professional environment, but even in a social environment a dude with earrings and a fedora is always an easy target.  As a guy, I think earrings should be left for the ladies.

EDIT: Unless you get an mdot finisher earring.  In which case all of my comments are incorrect and should be disregarded.

As a man who has had two earings for almost 20 years, and working in a professional environment, I couldn't disagree more.  Fashions change.  You might not like them, but they are actually more accepted than you make it seem.

ETA: I'm also straight.  You know.  The opposite of what you inferred.

Wasn't inferring that he was gay, nor have the discussions around the office been such.  We all know that guys with earrings is a commonality today.  Just went to my cousins high school soccer game and half of the dudes in the stand had gauged ears.  I was actually trying to show that people think he is going through some sort of identity crisis to show up to work with diamond earrings out of the blue.  Especially in a job where he is well respected.  I have plenty of friends with earrings, but was trying to show what perceptions some people have about dudes with earrings.  I couldn't care less what other folks do, but was just giving an example to answer the OPs question.

I had an earring in college (mid 90's) and it was fine, but after about 30, I personally think it is silly unless you are in a rock band or something, so I admit that I would look at people more closely if I was dealing with them in a professional world until I got to know who they were and what they were all about.

Why?

Why is it silly?

Says who?

Why would you "look at people more closely"?

What if they had tatoo's?  Same thing?  What if you couldn't see them?

What if they had piercings elsewhere but you couldn't see them?

What difference does it make?  None!  It is a perception that you base on preconceived notions on what a male with a piercing is.  In other words, judging a book by its cover.

Just curious, why the needle instead of a gun for piercing the earlobes? I thought it was ok for that but not good for any cartilage piercings? an inquiring mind wants to know

Guns aren't sterile, for one. Most guns have some plastic in their assemblies, meaning they cannot be autoclaved. And when that happens...you've got itsybitsy contaminants form the last person in the chair all over it.

Guns are basically blunt force trauma-a needle is much easier on your ear. The needles are hollow, one-time use, sterile, and hurt less.

Also, you get better jewelry and jewelry more suited to your lobe type with a professional piercer and a needle. Plus, a professional piercer is much better at giving you aftercare instructions--the stuff you get at Claire's is bad for your piercing and can slow healing.

I've got 14 piercings, some from guns, some not--and I will never recommend a gun (or a mall-type store) to anyone.

So where does drinking a six-pack of beer, then placing ice on each side of the lobe until numb, finishing by poking the earring through the ear fit in regarding sanitary piercing???

I got one as a sophomore in college back in the late 80's and that's how several of us did it.  The girlfriend of my suitemate brought over a few studs to pick from and within 20 minutes we all had pierced ears...I say it took 20 minutes because initially we couldn't agree who would go first, then after a few beers we went for it...

I only kept the earring for the school year...When it came time to head home for the summer the earring was gone...

To be brutally honest, they have been in for so long I rarely think about them.  They are now just a part of me.  When I first put in the one on the right, it was in college and something I had wanted to do for a long time.  I was out from under my father's roof so you could also call it rebellion.  The second one was after I moved to Chicago on a work transfer.  I figured I would just balance it out.  Now, it is such a part of my, I can't imagine what it would be like to take them out.

I work in an all male environment.....if you get both of your ears pierced and show up to work with diamond studs we will be merciless.  Laughing

It's not really sbout the earrings......it's just some new material for us. LOL

Quick PSA for guys: bad dye jobs are the WORST.

My BIL showed up Velveeta orange once.  All the women in the family, having once been teenaged girls, could recognize a bad attempt at a bleach job when we saw one, but he INSISTED up and down it was "from the sun."  Grew out.  Never mentioned again.  At least not to his face.  :D

My ex-fiance had a lot more salt than pepper in his salt-and-pepper at a time when it wasn't helping his career that he looked older.  Unfortunately, he was not aware of the difference between "darkish brown" (his natural color) and black.  Black... looked ridiculous.  Then he let about an inch of new growth come in, making his part a white stripe down his black hair.  Now he didn't just look ridiculous, he looked like a skunk.

So, men, if you are going to dye your hair, go to someone who specializes in color.  It will probably be expensive.  And if in doubt: don't.   There's just too much that can go wrong.

Anybody notice Doug Flutie last night during the MNF broadcast? I think he had a dye job. The temples were darker than the top.

Well for one, I think probably quite a few of us have been there :D (When I was 16, my boyfriend tried to pierce his own nose... Ahahahahaha. We ended up having to go to a tattoo place to get it done/finish the job. Which is also where  and when I got my first tattoo... )

Aside from that, though...actually, if you sterilize the needle, it's probably cleaner than sharing a dirty piercing gun with hundreds of complete strangers :D (NOT THAT I ADVOCATED THIS :p)

Is this a generation thing?
I would not/do not think twice about people with earrings, tattoos, unnaturally colored hair... it has absolutely no bearing or effect on my life. I think most of it is fascinating. Not in a "I'm fascinated and want to copy it" way, but simple fascination in regards to the creative expression. Even if I find it offensive or ugly - it fascinates me.

But I've noticed people in say, my parents and grandparents generation tend to be very vocal about their "disapproval" of these types of things.

To some degree, yes. It's also a personality thing, too (or maybe a career field thing?). My husband has no modifications, and thinks they are silly at best, unprofessional, gross, and douchey at worst. There are certain types/styles/locations of body mods that I think...are not the best choice if you want a career in certain paths, but whatever floats yoru boat, I guess.

This actually came up in conversation the other day (the professional thing) b/c I recently got my first tattoo that is in a largely visible location (forearm). All my others, along with my piercings could be covered/removed. Which is what I used to do once upon a time when interviewing for jobs (I was once rejected for a writing gig in corporate america b/c I had more than one ear piercing). Any more, though, I do not take any of them out, and if I am wearing a skirt/short sleeves, and you can see my tattoos, so be it.

Is it possible somewhere down the line that that attitude may cost me a job? Maybe. But I wouldn't be happy working in a place that would have those restrictions anyway, so it's not a loss for me. You either like my work, or you don't...that's what matters, I guess, in my mind. (Well, that and being a pleasant human being to my coworkers and all that interpersonal happy crappy)

For what it's worth, to follow up on my original post, I have been considering doing it for a while. I talked to my wife about it this past weekend and she is mostly ok with it so I will probably end up doing it this week or weekend somewhere. Other posters did make me think though and while I am do not have a huge reason why I want to get it done, it is just something I want so why not do it.

Much easier to take them out and have the holes close up in a year or ten if I decide I do not like them anymore, than, say, getting a tatoo removed.

1234run - 2012-10-23 11:14 AM Unless you are a rock star I would avoid it.

As a man who has had two earings for almost 20 years, and working in a professional environment, I couldn't disagree more.  Fashions change.  You might not like them, but they are actually more accepted than you make it seem.

ETA: I'm also straight.  You know.  The opposite of what you inferred.

actually...he implied.  you inferred.
