Subject: Get faster at short course or go long?

So I did the age group sprint world champs in my home town, Auckland, New Zealand this morning.

I qualified for the New Zealand team, did the training, did the opening ceremony, got to meet some great people from Australia, USA, GB, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and others.

I don't mean to sound un-appreciative, but something was just missing. When I made the team in my qualifying race in February 2012, I was excited and that was a goal I had been working towards for roughly 2 years.

But now it's all over, I feel at a bit of a crossroads. Do I try get faster at sprint and olympic distance, or do I move onto something different and go longer into 1/2 and full IM exclusively.

I do get more satisfaction out of doing longer training and races, but I also want to get faster and an overall better athlete too, so I can keep up with faster swimmers, cyclists and runners in training and racing.

Anyone else been in the same situation? Any advice?

Congratulations!

It seems like a personal dilemma that probably only you can answer. Having said that, if you like long distance training and racing, do that-just my off and observations locally is that fastest sprint athletes happen to also be training for and racing in Iron and Half  iron races but that could be coincidence.

How did you finish in your short course race?

If you've gotten to that level of competition in short course, and you're finding that you still feel something is missing, AND that you enjoy longer training.... sounds like it's just about time to go ahead and try long course.
