Subject: How long is enough recovery?

Training for my first IM (Nice 2013) and trying to include a half sometime before it but the problem is that Nice is right at the start of the season so all the (UK) triathlon's aren't on till after or very soon before it.

So my question is.. How long should I be leaving between half and full to recover etc.

Cheers

Scott

It depends.

It could be, at the extremes, as little as a week or as much as a few months.

A few of the factors to take into consideration are; your predisposition to recovery, do you naturally recover from workouts quickly?  How hard do you want to go in the HIM, do you want to compete or just make it a long training day?  How hard do you want to go in your IM, do you want the tanks full again before toeing the line at your A race?  How much do you need to taper?  How quickly can you get back on full volume training post HIM?  Is the HIM going to be a drop in the ocean in regards to your training volume, or is it going to be a massive ramp up (making it more difficult for your body to recover)?

At least 1.5 months earlier - not for recovery but so it fits the training cycle, unless you really sandbag and loaf through it (in that case what's the point).

Nice is super early so you might be stuck just doing a few half marathons - maybe some early sprints/olys?

My recovery from my first HIM (8 hours) is 1 week per coach   2 easy 40 minute swims and one easy 3 mile run and 2 easy core strength/stretching sessions.

Almost impossible to give a straight answer... it all depends on you, your athletic background and ability to recover. For some, HIM is not that tough on the body and they can go out and race again next weekend, for others, HIM is really tough and would require 4-6 weeks of recovery... In general, the more athletic background and years of training, the shorter the required recovery.

To be safe, I would plan something like 4-6 weeks out from you IM, longer if at all possible.

x2.   For my IM in 2013 I will be using Fitzgerald's 24 week plan. He calls for a HIM in week 20. For some that would be a problem, for others it would be just right.
