99 | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon If they don't cancel the race it will be the worst decision in sports since, well since the call in the packers game (maybe not that long). Still BAD decision for them to proceed with this race. I have been in bad hurricanes living here in FL and I can guarantee the city is in no way shape or form prepared for this no matter how bad they want to be. |

And Councilman James Oddo said, “To begin this one mile away from where we are still looking for bodies is sinful.” I wonder if he said the same thing to the MLB when the Yanks and Mets were both playing home games less than 2 weeks after the towers fell... pretty sure they were still looking for bodies then too. |

With all the people needing assistance right now, I think it's irresponsible to pull police/EMS resources for this. I understand the importance of the race on many levels, but this is NOT the time.
Conversely, that is a whole lot of dollars coming into the city for that race. Hotels, restaurants, etc... Perhaps that isn't as big of a deal for a place like NYC, but I'd think that every bit helps. If nothing else, it will help offset all of the overtime that is getting paid out right now. Hotels are now filled to capacity with people who are without power or without a home. There are far more important things on the list than executing a marathon right now. Its a real bad decision that is indefensible. |

I'm pretty sure full hotels are not a problem. There are hundreds of local families already taking them. Also, looks like participant backlash is also growing: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/02/nyc-marathon-runner-penny-... op of that, how the hell do you even GET to SI? Half the MTA system is shut down for weeks. Police OT will be paid out of FEMA's pockets somehow or another. |

Regular 172 Ottawa, ON | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon I fully understand both side opinion on this race. What i would do: 1- Cancel the race with a guarantee resgistration for 2013 (I believe they change it already) 2- Ask runners that are coming or already in town to lend support to residents and provide an incentive that a portion of this year registration fee will go towards next year registration. With the amount of folks coming to NYC for the race, it will be a big helping hand to get the city backup and running. (all the city and not portion of it)

What i would do: 1- Cancel the race with a guarantee resgistration for 2013 (I believe they change it already) Would you suggest that the event refund people's entry fee? 2- Ask runners that are coming or already in town to lend support to residents and provide an incentive that a portion of this year registration fee will go towards next year registration. Thanks for spending $500-$1000+ to get here and another $300-$1000+ to stay for a few days. Because you did, here's a shovel help dig out, and if you do you get a free race jacket next year if you spend several thousand more dollars to come back. With the amount of folks coming to NYC for the race, it will be a big helping hand to get the city backup and running. (all the city and not portion of it)
I really don't see too many people going for this in our "me first" society. |

Deep in the Heart of Texas | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon Keep the race as schedule = everyone eventually is upset (or worse). Residents displaced by marathoners in some hotels; marathoner's reservations not honored at other hotels due to displaced residents; traffic issues; mass transit issues; etc. Cancel the race = some runners upset and some businesses & politicians upset. Focus stays on relief efforts, etc.
I can't believe Bloomberg choose option 1 (although I wouldn't be surprised to see an about face after all of the backlash).

Member 52 North Richland Hills, Texas | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon I think it's rediculous to run it. They say it's for the money. Two or three weeks from now will raise the same money. Generators, police and port-a-potties are needed on Staten Island not in Manhatten. These people can not even get toilet paper or water. No heat or electricity. If they run it...and they will...they should run the whole thing in Staten Island so the world can see the forgotten ones. |

Bingo! The reason this is such a huge deal is because it's running and not a "major" sport. I agree with the fact that the race shouldn't be run, as I also believe those games shouldn't have been played. I also would like to point out that the Giants play Sunday afternoon. Last time I checked that took police presence, but I haven't heard a word about it. Edited by rjrankin83 2012-11-02 3:52 PM |

Oh please....nobody has forgotten anyone, that's ridiculous. I didn't think they could pull it off, but as I sadi earlier, if anyplace could it'd be New York. I don't know if it's the right thing or not since I'm not there, but I have seen plenty from both sides of the fence defending their positions to hold it or not. One thing's for sure, life goes on. In the grand scheme of things having or not having this marathon isn't that big of a deal.....it's 6 hours and probably less than 30,000 people. By this time next week it'll be lucky to be a footnote.
