Subject: RE: To all 2012 IM AZ Volunteers.... the hubby and i both volunteered this year. our ultimate goal was to sign up for next year, but also to give back to this awesome sport. i'm so glad we volunteered because we had SO. MUCH. FUN. and really, it was our pleasure to help everyone hopefully have the best race day experience they could have. bike check-in was fun to just chat with the athletes (though, please don't at us to not touch your bike if we're just trying to help you place it on the rack correctly. besides, plenty of other people will be touching your ride on race day since you won't have to re-rack it ...) wetsuit stripping (peeling, whatever) was mass insanity, ridiculous fun and i HIGHLY recommend it for anyone looking to volunteer at an IM race. sunscreening athletes just off the bike and onto the run was fun and a lot less messy than i thought it would be. run aid station 7 (the trisports.com disco station) was super fun and i almost lost my voice yelling out for coke or chicken broth (plus it was fun to dress up and hang out for five hours in an afro wig and sunglasses). it was also hard being there late into the night, waiting for the last few athletes to come down, praying they'd hit our station in time to hopefully make the midnight cut. i also want to thank the volunteers working the registration tent who opened it EARLY! we got in line at 12:10, 12:15ish (first, with another group right behind) and were very thankful we were able to register by 6:something as opposed to 8! here's to next year! (also, if you've never volunteered to work a race before - dooooo it! it's so much fun and an easy way to give back to the racing community.) |
