Subject: Planet X Wheelset or Front Flo 60

I own a Specialized Roubaix with shorty aerobars and I want to replace the stock wheels for better performance in triathlons. I've narrowed it down to either a Planet X 60mm wheelset or a Flo 60 front wheel and leave the rear wheel as is.  I've already got an extra cassette if I chose to go with the Planet X set.

Another question I have is whether or not most people swap between their race wheels for racing only or do you leave them on for racing and training rides.

I'm a MOP rider average weight.

Thanks,

Ralph

I would say get the Flo60 for the front, but dont neglect the rear wheel. Get a DiscCover (WheelBuilder covers are an awesome value) and now you have a rear disc and an aero front wheel for less than the PX wheelset. The disc covers are easy-on, easy-off for races.

But don't you have to take the cassette off to put the wheel cover on? Sounds like a pain in the azz. Maybe I could put the wheel cover on a different wheel and just swap the wheel out?

installing / removing the cover takes about 5 minutes (including taping if you do that... i do) you just need the tools to remove the cassette.

It's an important repair skill to know anyways... might has well save on the shop bill when you have to replace your cassette.

Great question.  I won't tell you which way to go but I will say that a good aero front wheel and a covered rear wheel is one of the most affordable aero options out there.  In all honesty that set up is very comparable to the much more expensive options and I recommend it all the time.

Regarding training on your racing wheels... I've done it for years.  Even before I owned this company.  I wanted to get used to how the wheels handled in different wind conditions and I felt I should enjoy the wheels if I spent a lot of money on them.  At the time I was riding a 60/90 type wheelset.  The one wheel I've never trained on (an neither do many others) is a disc wheel.  They make better racing wheels.  The aluminum rims and Sapim CX-Ray spokes make our wheels great training AND racing wheels.

Finally, swapping cassettes does take some time and is a bit of a pain however, if you have the right tools and you are only doing it every now and then, it's not a big deal.

Feel free to ask me any additional questions should you have them.

Take care,

Hey Chris, if I buy the front Flo 60 now, will the rear Flo 60 still be around a few months from now when I'm able to scratch together the money to buy it?  How long do you anticipate having them in stock and will the cost be the same?  I don't want to buy the front wheel now, and not be able to get a matching rear wheel a few months down the road.

Thanks all for your suggestions,

Ralph

As it currently stand we will be selling the same product line for 2013 and the price will be the same.  We currently have stock AND we are building wheels now to have stock for next season.  There is no guarantee that we will not sell out but we'll be doing our best to keep inventory stocked at all times.  I would imagine that you could order a matching rear wheel next year and have little to no lead time.

I hope that helps.  Let me know if you have any additional questions.
