Maybe one advantage to being in an urban environment is that, in terms of security, there really weren’t any significant changes to business as usual this week. The teachers in the older grades talked a little about what the kids had heard and stuff, but the entry/exit procedures are the same as they’ve always been. There’s one open door into the school with a cop sitting at a desk. You have to check in and sign in and you can’t go upstairs (where the classrooms are) without an escort. If you’re there to pick up your kid, they call the classroom and the kid comes down and meets you in the lobby.

Pretty much business as usual.  We got a call from the elementary school ("safety of our kids is our first priority . . ."), but aren't aware of any changes.  The pre-school modified their entry/exit points a bit, but not much changed.  Apparently, almost half of the first grader's class was out on Monday.  We didn't even consider keeping them out of school.

Business as usual at our elementary school in Minnesota.  E-mails from the Principal and the superintendent were sent outlining their safety protocols.  My second grader and her class had a lengthy discussion about the tragedy on monday.  This seemed to upset my wife a little, we had sheltered the kids from the news all weekend.  My wife got over it, we are just still horrified about the whole thing, those poor children and parents and community....

My girls are in Elementary School (6th Grade) and Middle School (8th Grade).  We received an e-mail from the principals of both schools (same e-mail from the school district) stating that there will be an increased presence from the Sheriff's Department but no changes other than that.

Neither of the schools said anything to the kids about the incident.  My wife and I sat the girls down and talked to them about it.

The elementary school already had a lock where they needed to buzz you in and the middle school has a guard by the entrance.

South Florida here.  Elementary school is not in one building - it's several buildings spread out like a mini campus.  It is surrounded by a low fence that would be very easy to jump if someone really wanted to get in.  They did start using the buzzer at the front door and the classroom doors are now locked.  Oh, and DH said there was a cop at the car drop off line earlier in the week but I didn't see one this morning.  We have a lot of walkers and bikers who go in the other side of the school - I am not sure if they had a cop there or not.

Neither of my kids teachers (grades 2 & 4) talked about Sandy Hook.

Middle school has always had a cop at the car drop off line, this week the principal was there as well.  They have always had a buzzer and you had to check in with the front desk.  You couldn't even pick your child up early without showing ID and they would check to see if you were on the approved pick up list.  (it is supposed to be this way at elementary as well but I have ever seen them do it - maybe they just recognize more parents since it is smaller)

Today about 1pm I got a call from the school robo call system.  The middle school had a lock down because there was an unknown person in the building.  Turns out is was a parent who forgot to sign in - come on - how could you forget something like that this week?  I hope the kids weren't too scared.  I am also wondering how they got in since the system there is usually pretty good.  I'm guessing maybe they walked in the front door when someone else got buzzed in and just bypassed the office since the main door doesn't lead directly into the office but to the front hall.
