Subject: Speedo Swim Jammer with Tri Top?

I've been swimming competitively almost my whole life and just got into triathlons last summer.  This summer I'll be taking it a bit more seriously and trying to place highly in age group categories, after realizing I could do quite well in them.

I'm trying to save money for a sprint triathlon (will use one-piece for Olympic+ distance) and have a question:

Rather than buying a tri bottom and tri top, would just using a swim jammer and buying a tri top to use with it be practically the same, regardless of the slight padding in the bottom?  I have tons of swim jammers and briefs so I thought of this idea after realizing buying both the bottom and top could be pricey. I won't be worried about the padding in a jammer compared to a normal tri bottom since it's only a sprint.

Also, one more question:

Are the tri tops made to be used in the swim portion? I see a lot of competitors swim the race with just the bottoms then put the top on in T1.

Sure you could do it in a jammer, hell you'll see people do the whole race in just a speedo. The padding does add comfort though. Depends on which top you get, so are and some aren't made to be swum in. I'd say a majority have pockets or they are not tight to the skin around the neck or arms a will cause drag

Most tri tops are fine for the swim. The tighter the better, as it will drag a bit. Most will wear a swim skin or wetsuit to reduce that drag. It sounds like you would prefer to spend less as opposed to spend more. Nothing wrong with using the swim jammers. If your comfortable cycling without a pad it's fine. I did my first 2 races in under armor compression shorts. Also, a tri top is a fancy compression top, the main benefit being pockets and a half zip. Nothing wrong with racing in a compression top or tight fitting dri fit sleeveless shirt. Either, or a tri top - can be put on in T1 if you don't wanna swim with it, however; it is much more difficult to put on a compression top when wet.

It will likly work fine.

Personally, my jammers are fine to cycle in, just a bit uncomfortable on the run.  Tri-shorts, in addition to padding, offer a bit more 'support' for the sausage and biscuits.

Go for a short run in your wet jammers tho' before race day to try it out.

Why not just use the one piece that you intend to wear for the Oly?

Don't have it yet. I'm not 100% sure if I will use it, but I'm planning on buying it once summer comes around.

5'7"; 125 and O'Hara...That'd be great if you could but I definitely don't want you giving me stuff if you're still planning on possibly using it at one point or another.

I'd second the "use the tri-suit" responses.  I'm sure you'd be fine with the jammers since you are talking about a sprint distance race... not too much time on the bike anyway.

But, and this is a big thing to consider here... if you want to do well as you mentioned... wearing jammers only in the pool and then putting on a top in T1 is not advisable.  You will waste a lot of time trying to put a skin tight top on your soaking wet body.  Sprints can be won or lost by a matter of seconds.  I wouldn't want to give any of them away in transition.

Thanks for the tips. For the sprint one I'll probably just go ahead and race the whole thing in a jammer without a top. If a top is required though after swim (sometimes is), I'll wear a tri top but keep it on for the swim too so I don't waste that time in T1 like you mentioned.

For the Philadelphia Triathlon (Olympic) I'll most likely be investing in a one-piece suit.
