Subject: Looking to upgrade road bike

Looking to upgrade my husband's road bike and looking for recommendations because I get overwhelmed anytime I start looking. In April 2011, we bought starter bikes and he bought a 2010 Trek 2.3 Alpha. Bike fits him great other than one little problem, he would like a more aggressive position. For example, if he rides my Cannondale CAAD 9-5 (same size bike), he is in a much less upright position. We've already slammed his Trek to lower him more.

So looking for road bike recommendations that would have a more aggressive position and willing to spend between $2k-$3k. Not really interested in a tri bike since we are looking to do more century ride and longer ultra cycling events versus tris/dus.

If you're budget is 2k, spend $250 (or what ever the local rate happens to be) on a bike fit NOW and then go out and spend $1750 on a new bike. That is by far the best investment you can make, especially if you want to get "more aggressive" which many times translates to pain and inefficiency if done wrong. Although you quite commonly get the cost of the bike fit back as a discount when you buy a new bike, so it might not even cost you anything...

If your husband's goal is to get more aggressive, then definately get a fitting.  But I'm just curious as to why he wants to get so much more aggressive if your goals reflect events where comfort seems to be more optimal.

Bike manufacturers such as Specialized (Tarmac and Roubaix) and Cannondale (Super Six and Synapse) make two lines of top end road bikes.  One for aggressive road racing, and another for more comfort (but can still be raced).

Agree with jan.  I bought some aerobars and had the LBS fit them to the road bike with the understanding I would race tri's.  Worked great.  I ended up with a new stem but the setup really helped my performance.  Went from 20 mph ish sprint split to 23 mph oly split with less than 1000 miles on the new setup.  Well worth the $130 bucks for the fitting.

He's been fit to this bike both with and without shorty aero bars. He really just puts the bars on for longers tris/dus. Whenever he's not on the bars though, he is extremely upright. The desire for the more aggressive position is really just to have a more aero position without having to be on the drops or on aero bars.

OK got it, had to re-read your post.  I guess he wants so hammer those flats during those century rides.

I got a CAAD-10 Ultegra five months ago and love it.  I threw on some Profile Design T4 Cobra aero bars along with an Adamo saddle and got it refitted.  It's now way more comfortable and makes getting into aero way easier.  I would highly recommend this setup if you're on a $2,500 or less budget.

CAAD 10-4 owner here, and love the bike. Honestly can't tell the difference in frame material between it and my carbon tri bike.
