Subject: Entry/Mid-Level Triathlon Bike Question
New to the sport and I have looked all over the internet for bike info. Was wondering if anyone on here could give me some pro/cons on getting an entry level Felt S32/Equinox 7 bike? I have an opportunity to get an E7 bike for $1199 (brand new/no pedals) and was wondering what you thought about this. Comparing it to Felt bike it seems like a no brainer, but what do I know......Also, what shoes and pedals do you recommend?

New to the Game!

Actually, the Felt is a better speced bike. But the main factor should be whatever fits you best. BUt all things being equal, I'd go with the felt.

Shoes and pedals are a personal choice. Generally, I'd get a pair of tri-specific shoes, but different brands fit differently. Sidi, for example is generally a better choice for narrow feet, and Louis Garneau tend to fit wider feet better.

Personally, I'd go with a large platform pedal (Look), as they tend to transfer power to the pedals better and don't cause as do many foot pain issues as do smaller (SPD-like) pedals.

Welcome to a great sport and a great website!

Thanks for the reply. It seems that fit comes first and that makes sense to me. The reason I asked the question is that the Equinox 5 bike (Treks Entry) is $1299 before the sale and the Equinox 7 bike is $1499 before the sale and $1199 after. I was leaning toward the Felt S32 bike when comparing it to the Equinox 5 but since I found out about the discount on the in-stock E7 I thought it made more sense.

If you can wait...you'll see great deals in the fall and winter! Might give a few more options...

I'll take any opportunity to plug Felt bikes. I was the extremely proud/happy owner of a Felt road bike for about a year, and my decision came down to the Felt F75 v. Trek 1500. After riding both, the Felt just felt like twice the bike the Trek was (not that it was a bad bike). It'd certainly be different with a tri bike (I actually didn't choose Felt here) but I have always been uber-impressed with anything Jim Felt turns out. And there's a reason there aren't too many $1200-1400 tri bikes - it's just not really feasible to put up your dukes against the S32.

Look type pedals are great.

Here are the ones that I recommend.

plus they have a 10% discount on top of the savings.

Funny, I'm going to look at the same two bikes.  One LBS has the Trek Eq 7 and the other has the Felt S32.

What happened to the S25?

I've been watching the following bikes for the past few days just need to go out and see what fits me the best.

Equinox 7 2006
S32 2005 & 2006
S25 2004
S22 2006
Cervelo Dual 2006
Cervelo P2k 2004

I'm new to the game and kinda competitive so on one side I'm leaning toward the less expensive side but on the other hand I like a high quality bike too. How would you rank the above mentioned bikes as far as quality goes, think of each one with stock components?

Thanks,

Primo

I've ridden the '04 P2K before and it was a nice ride.  Just borrowed a friends, so I know nothing about the Dual.  The Eq. 7 comes in the WSD, which may or may not be hokey, but it fits me very well.  I rode one a few weeks ago.  It's spec'd with mid-range Bontranger and 105, ok for the money.  It also comes with a 12-25 cassette which I prefer over an 11-23 ( I suck on hills).

The S22 has some Dura Ace but it's also $1000 more.  The S32 has a mix of 105/Ultegra/Dura Ace.  Seems like more bang for the buck than the Trek.  I'm not real sure the Felt will fit me tho.  The smallest is a 48c and I need to find one to ride it first.

Which ones have you ridden?

None yet, but I will here in the next week or so. Bottom line it sounds like I need to try them out and see what works for me personally. Let me know how your fitting goes with the Trek and Felt.
