Hot hot hot for me. I sweat a lot when I run. When its hot, it just runs off and evaporates. When its cold, it freezes to me, my clothes, and I get even colder. I layer up which helps, but then it feels too restrictive and I hate that more than being hot.

Depends on the time of year you ask me...During the summer, when I'm melting away, I'll fantasize about layering for freezing temps thinking it would be so much better than the heat. A couple weeks ago, while bundled up for a freezing cold run,  I was fantasizing about melting away in the summer heat thinking it would so much better than the cold...

I'm sorry but when I'm so hot that I feel light headed and I know my HR is high there is virtually nothing I can reasonably do to fix it.

However if anyone thinks zero degrees, -5, -15 etc. cannot be run warm in virtually ANY conditions I say your gear is not sufficient and/or you may not know how to layer properly..

Honestly I'm not intending to offend anyone, just my thinking regarding "extremes" in heat and cold..

I love running in the heat...but looking back, when it comes to times, my times were better in the cold.

But, like mentioned earlier, it depends on what "extremes" we're talking here.  If 72F is "the middle"  I'd have to be crazy to take 112F over 22F.  (not fun-wise, but performance-wise)

The older i get, the more i enjoy the heat. The last two years, anything under 50 and my joints hurt. Plus, i grew up in the south.

Easy hot any day. Makes my lungs and ears hurt to run in the cold, plus my nose runs and my eyes tear. I like sweating.

I prefer hot especially for any racing.  I am always wearing at least one more layer in the cold than anyone else.

Extremes in weather didn't much bother me when I was younger.   Now, if given a choice, I prefer the weather to be in the Goldie Locks zone.     Age and all that it brings....  Cry

No question - the cold.

You can always put on more layers, but you can only take off so many before you get arrested for indecent exposure.

Definitely extreme cold - just because you can ALWAYS layer up so that extreme cold becomes warm and toasty. You might have to wear a face mask, ski goggles, and ice adapters on your shoes, but if you're freezing on a run, you have nothing to blame except yourself, even if it's -15 outside.

I mean, if it's was -15 degrees and you needed to run in a polar parka and still not be warm?  How fun is that?

You don't have the right gear.  I've run in - 20 F with three insulating layers and my thin running jacket.  You don't need a polar parka.  Besides, when it's that cold, the snow has a lot of grip so it's like running on pavement.

btw, it's currently -23 F here and going down to - 40 tonight.

I choose the heat, course I live in Miami also.

Others here have said that in the cold you can just layer up but in the heat you can't take off enough.  After 30 years of working out in the south Florida heat I have learned that exposing the skin to direct hot sunlight is NOT the way to stay the coolest.  To stay cooler in 85+ temps and bright Florida midday sun, I keep my skin covered with WHITE, very thin/breathable materials like 91% poly and 19% spandex. Once this material gets saturated with sweat you can feel you skin actually cooler due to the affect of evaporation.  The concept of cooling through evaporation is not widely utilized by triathletes. White helmet, white socks and shoes, white very breathable baseball cap and sunglasses help also because white materials absorb less sun heat. Sun tan lotion is NOT the correct answer as it sweats off and/or blocks your pores and gets all over everything. Sure your heart rate is higher in the extreme heat, but if you know how to hydrate and fuel correctly in the heat you will have a huge advantage over your competitors.  Hope this helps

That's good information...A few tips to help with the heat is great...does all white work the same when the heat is due to humidity vs. absolute temperature? Thanks

Living in NC, the heat/humidity is definitely more intense then the cold.

That being said, I much more enjoy running on mornings like this morning when the temperature was 20F then on a day when it is 95F and 90% humidity.

This morning's attire ... shorts, long sleeve winter compression shirt, technical tee, hat and gloves and I was never uncomfortable.

Define extreme. I tend to workout indoors in extreme conditions, and generally prefer to be hot rather than cold, but extreme cold is easier to compensate for with extra insulation and such.

I've run in windchills down to about -55 (air temps in the -20s) and I've run at 110 (desert air) and 100+ and humid.

It takes a lot more convincing to run when it's hot than when it's cild. I don't mind the cold. (For running, anyway)

I guess I'll go with heat... although it wouldn't be a run, it would be alternating between slog/walk

Either is fine with me. I ran 10 miles in 100 degree heat in July and 11 miles at zero degrees this past Sunday. With the proper clothes and some good running partners or music, I can handle pretty much any weather conditions.

In the summer when it was hot, I used to wish it was cold.  In the winter when it was really cold, I wished it was summer.  I no longer have the winter wishes in summer.
