Subject: 120 days post op training for oly?
Input and advice please:

I am 120 days post op from a microdiskectomy at L5 S1. Medically cleared from surgeon to do whatever my body says to do. I am a big boy, 6'3" 230 (down from 235 14 days ago!)

I have done 2 sprints in the past 2 years (with a herniated disk all along).

I have my eyes set on the Black Diamond triathlon in Enumclaw this fall, September 24th.

I started training in earnest 2 weeks ago. Easy base of 45 minute run (around 10min/ mile), 1:30 bike (at approx 17MPH) and 40 minute swim (around 2:30/100, yes SLOW, I know).

With 12 weeks before the race I think I can easily be ready. My training plan peaks the week before the race at almost 8 hours; with a long swim of 54 minutes, long bike of 150 minutes and long run of 74 minutes.

I will use race week as a taper week with only about 2 hours of training that week, so almost a drop dead type taper. 2 swim workouts and a bike ride- no running that week. Pehaps I should add a short run that week?

It does feel good to be training again!

Good luck, just listen to your body.  I did my first Olympic 4 weeks out of rehab (3 months of rehab) for a fasciomety.  They basically sewed up my fascia on my hamstring and put in a patch.  Then I did my first HIM less than 6 months out of rehab.  So you can do it.  Just take it nice and slow!

I had that same procedure on the same L5 - S1 disc two years ago.  It is amazing how they can go in there and clean everything out with such a small incision.  Made for a real quick recovery.

Good luck with your training.  I think you are on the right approach.  Listening to your body and staying consistent are the keys.
