Subject: Aero Wheels vs. Stock Wheels

I don't understand the dynamics of Bike wheels right now I have stock wheels and am looking to get some aero race wheels.  From what I have heard lighter is better.  My current wheels, Mavic CXP 22, weigh less than any of the Aero Race wheels I have looked at mainly Zipp 404/808 firecrest clinchers.  Even though they are they are heavier would it be recommended exchange these out.

Another question is if you had the oppurtunity to buy either the Zipp 404 or the Zipp 808 which would you purpose.

These will be the first race wheels I have purchased.

Thanks,

Assuming you are referring triathlon, aero trumps weight.  Unless you've got some ungodly hilly course the aero benefits of a 404 or 808 will far outweigh the weight penalty.

Agree with above.  Unless you are climbing up a mountain (and not coming back down), the aerodynamic properties of a wheel will make it faster rather than the weight of the wheel.  Even on some of the hilliest courses, a more aero wheel is preferred even if it's heavier because you get a lot of benefit on the downhill.

As far as how deep you should go, most people will do well with a 50-60mm set, or a 50-60mm front and a deeper rear.  You can go deeper in the front, but just know that some of the deeper wheels don't test as fast at slower speeds in crosswinds.

I would also look at many other companies than Zipp.  They make awesome products, I do have a couple of sets of their wheels (used), but there are many other companies that have caught up to them at a lower price point.  FLO is less than half the cost, and HED is slightly cheaper.  I believe the HED Jet 6 actually tested better than the Zipp 404.

First wheels HUH, YES I would change them but... might want to borrow a set and see how they feel (Crosswind)...

404 frnt/808 rear? I have a set of 50mm, 60mm and an 88mm rear not sure I would be comfortable on 88mm front but some peps run 1080 (108mm) fronts...

Depth of the wheel is not really a good indicator how the wheel will feel like in cross winds. Toroidal shapes helps stabilize the wheel in cross winds to the point where it could be very little difference from the Mavics...

Also, cross wind sensitivity is really over rated... with a good fit and good bike handling skills, it can be an almost non-issue. My wife is 120lbs (if that) and rides Zip 808's in all her races and some of those has been crazy windy...

Another thing to keep in mind that a disc will stabilize the bike in cross winds when used with a deeper front. Basically, you equalize the pressure over the entire surface
