Subject: USAT Rule Question
In my tri coming up in two weeks they have me listed in the Male(30) category. I'm only 29, I won't be 30 until November. So after reading the rules, I found that they use the age you will be on December 31 of the race year. Why? Either age group I'm in (25-29) or (30-34), I still don't have a chance of placing, I'm just curious as to why this is and why they don't use your actual age?

I believe it is so you can't place in one age group and then qualify for nationals in another age group. I.E. you qualify in the 25-29 age group then Race in 30-34, thus possibly giving you an advantage.

Well first of all it depends on the race......the Half IM's and IM's they are using the age you are on race day.......

I think logistically it's just easier to have everyone one age for the entire year - for every race they race.....

Any USAT event calculates race day age the same way, regardless of distance. It's a new rule this year, meant to synch with the ITU rule.

Everyone has part of the picture right.

USAT switched this year to be 'age as of the end of the year', to match up with ITU and go with the idea of both qualifying and competing in nationals and worlds, all in the same age group, in a single year.

The USAT-sanctioned races which run under WTC's umbrella (IMNA, Ironman and 70.3 Half-Iron) have a change to compete as age-on-day-of-race, There are other half- and full- iron distance races which share the same lengths, but don't carry the WTC label - they use the end-of-year method.

Yes you are correct ~ I left out the IMNA part ~

It's been a very confusing issue for people ~ as an event coordinator ~ I've noticed that people are completely unsure what to put on registration forms ~ even when it clearly says "age as of Dec 31, 2006"........they are just so use to the "age as of race day"........

Either way, it doesn't affect me at all. My birthday is January 1st. So I always just enter my age as of race day. I'm glad I don't have to worry about the new age rule. Now I can concentrate on everyone passing me.
