Subject: Midweek long run during taper week?
Hello! I'm doing an Olympic tri on Saturday but am also 5 weeks out from a grueling half marathon.  My half mary plan calls for a 10 mile run tomorrow...I'm not sure if I should do the full ten or shorten it a bit.  Thursday and Friday will definitely be light days as I'll be traveling to the triathlon and just won't have much time except for a few quick workouts.  What would BT do?

Eh, hard to say without looking at the overall training plan. If the Oly is not an "A" race, I say go for it. Maybe just run it slower. Of course, I don't know your athletic background/history. Some people can run 10 miles and they don't require a lot of recovery from it. Some cannot.

Really you just need to decide what's more important to you... the Oly or the half mary. Can you skip that 10 miler and be OK to achieve your goals for the half mary?

If you feel like the run won't take that much out of you (done at an easy pace), then go for it. You could also shorten the run to 7-8 miles and still be pretty good.

If it was me, I would do between 7-8 miles and keep it at a nice easy pace.

I would probably do the 10 Kim but keep it very, very easy, like recovery run pace or slower, If I felt like going faster then I would cut it back to 7  miles or so.

That was along the lines of what I was thinking...shorten it up a bit perhaps and go easy.  I'll probably do 7-8 miles, that'll give me some time to get some core in too.  Great advice, thanks!

Just run 4 miles at the end of your Oly- that'll take you right to 10 miles.  Wink

depends what you've been running in the past weeks. if the 10miler isn't a huge deal (normally), I'd go for it. Rest easy thursday & friday.

if the Oly is an A race for you then perhaps back off.  but since you said "grueling" HM, that means get your training in.

how well do you recover is the other question...

Here's my $0.02:
If you are really tapering, you shouldn't be doing a long run.
10 miles isn't a long run when it comes to a marathon!
Lastly, why not think of your 10k off the bike, after 1.5 hours of racing, as your long run. You will get a lot more benefit out of your training and a bigger gain in fitness if you are able to push very hard at the end of the OLY race in prep for the marathon.

Hope that helps.

I'll be at Lake Havasu this Saturday as well. Look for me with the CU Team - come over and say HI!
