Subject: Cortisone Shot

I hope everyone’s week is starting out well.  So just a quick background, I am 27 and have had 2 reconstructive knee surgeries on the same knee (football wasn’t nice to me).  My knee always bothers me, and I am sure anyone who has had surgery on a knee, shoulder, etc. when the weather changes you can especially feel it. Anyway, I am doing a HM in May (flying pig) and the course is VERY hilly. I have been doing a lot of hill training in preparation. Long story short, my knee really bothers me when I am running up the hills. It doesn’t feel like I have re-injured it, but just a sharp pain. I am assuming it’s just some scar tissue in there that is giving me trouble.  I have gotten cortisone shots in the past but not in the middle of training. Obviously, I am concentrating a lot of my workouts to running, but still do plenty of swimming in the morning and hours on the trainer. Does anyone have any experience with cortisone shots while training? I am thinking I will probably have to lay low on the running for a week and just concentrate on swimming and biking for a week.

What are your thoughts BT nation?

Clearly I will be asking my Doc these same questions, but I am about 99% sure he isn’t a tri athlete, so I would rather go directly to the source which is all of you!

I've had the shot twice in the past and I will no longer get them. For me, I felt great when I had them and my knee felt as if nothing was wrong. Knowing better, and I didn't listen to myself, I pushed things and only ended up hurting myself more.

For me, I would stay away from the shot. Glucosamine has worked wonders for me.

Good luck with your training and race.

I have had cortisone in the hip and in the shoulder.  Both times it was more to help with the PT and rehabing the joint than to make everything all better.  If you are going to get the shot, then go balls to the wall cause you can now... Don't!  If you want to get the shot to help you while you PT the knee then it can be a good adjunct.

I had a cortisone shot in my heel and ended up with a stress fracture in the heel.

Went to the Doc yesterday after work.  He played around with my knee and pretty much determined that I have a lot of scar tissue in there from 2 surgeries.  He said the cortisone shot would help with the pain, but i will eventially have to get it scopped. He said I wasnt in any danger of re-injuring it again, so all is well in the land of knees.

I actually saw a doctor for my hip. I have arthritis in the hip and there is not much that they can do for it at this point. Probably looking at a hip replacement at some point. When I asked about my options, he mentioned a cortisone shot as one option. I explained that I really did not want to consider a hip replacement at this point in time, and he thought this might be an avenue to pursue. He understands what I do and is all about keeping his patients active. I have resisted because I do not like even taking medication, but I am considering it. Interesting comments on this topic. I would love to hear more.

I've had cortisone shots in my knee (chondromalacia...which didn't do much), and my back (spondylolisthesis, which helped A LOT).  As others have said, there are some risks involved degradation of the joint through repeated use, so I would say they're more of a method to get you to be able to hammer your PT as opposed to a cure for injury.
