Has anyone ever done this race?  They have a mile, 5k or 10k option I believe on April 6th.   Might regret it mid race, but signed up for the 10k last week.  Curious if anyone has ever raced it before and what the tides were like.

Thanks...

I swam the 5k a couple of years ago. Fun. Water is the nice combo of salt water bur relatively calm conditions. Well organized. I'm not sure I would have wanted to go beyond the 5K distance, but that is a personal decision.

Thanks for feedback, will post back on results.   Planning the Swim around Key West in June so this was my "get ready" race to see if I am at least 1/2 ready....

Good luck on the mile race...   I am getting more excited for the race than I was a few weeks ago.  Had a good long swim yesterday so that helped with confidence.  The Swim Around Key West has been my goal for 2 years.   Last year I couldnt make it at the last minute so I am really looking forward to it this year.  Hey, they still have relay spots open!

Thank you Cardenas1...hmmmm key west swim is on my bucket list for sure so don't tempt me...lol...I am not fast but not the slowest so I would have to find a relay team that does not mind this! I have no clue how to even look for one as I just know people doing it alone. So, I wait to hear about your awesome race report so I can continue to dream about it!

I live in KW and have thought about doing the Swim around KW, but I am a little freaked out by the distance. When I swim, I usually feel like I could swim forever, but that is only swimming a few miles. How much training have you done for the distance? What is your longest swim so far?

Trust me, I am living in a world of ignorance right now with this distance.  I have done a few 5k OWS races and this weekend will be my first 10k OWS race in Miami.   Will let you know how that goes.  I feel ready though.   I have a busy schedule so right now I manage about 3,000 yrds 3x per week in the pool and do an OWS every weekend anywhere from 2.5 - 3.5 miles.   That distance will definately have to start increasing soon.   But I have been building the swim fitness for a while and recently did the Bone Island Full Tri in January.  That 2.4 mile swim felt very easy relatively speaking (1:14:00).   I am niether fast nor slow so really at ease knowing I am going for the distance and really not "racing".   So I train at a higher cadence etc I am sure I will be swimming with in June.    You should do it.   If not, sign up to be a kayaker and experience the course this year.   Plus they pay you.

Well, that was much harder than I was hoping for.   The whole swim felt slow for me and only got worse on each loop.  There were some currents playing havoc, but not sure can say it was all my troubles.   Just need to train for longer distances.   My shoulders were toast on Sunday.   I ended up with 3:59:49 which was about 45 minutes longer than planned.   Back to the pool and drawing board!
