I've never had foot, ankle, or knee issues, but a few years ago I got into the habit of putting Dr. Scholls inserts in all my running shoes for "more cushioning".  I wear Asics and Pearl Izumis and have started wondering if the inserts are doing more harm than good by throwing off the intended design of the shoe.  Thoughts?

I had a PF issue last fall and the local running store recommended putting SuperFeet insoles in my Saucony Ride 5s (I got the blue insoles).  They feel pretty good and I get good arch support.

Personally, I think you're fine with what you're doing ... isn't that part of the premise behind the Hokas ... a soft ride.  The only issue I see is if you're putting the Dr Scholls on top of the running shoe inserts...I've tried that before and it gets too cramped in the foot box for my taste.

I've only read where it would be really harmful if you get corrective orthotics to put into corrective shoes. Say you buy a shoe that is design for overpronation and you put a orthotic that in that is design to maintain neutral. Or pronation limiting orthotic in a neautral shoe, eventhough you need that neatural.  There is also the chance of going to extreme with overpronation shoes and orthotics.

I'd say that if you know your gait patterns and have the proper shoe type, as long as you match the insole to the shoes and needs, then it wouldn't be a problem.

Good points.  I am a slight overpronator and buy shoes accordingly.  I'll have to look at the orthotics, but I think they are neutral.

What come in most running shoes are kind of crappy.  If its working for you then I would stick with it.  If you have not been having any problems the chances of doing harm are slim.  Running stores have a little better quality and usually are pretty knowledgeable about helping people choose something appropriate.  The OTC orthotics are actually pretty decent and MUCH cheeper than custom

My PT suggested I remove the cheap insoles from my New Balance running shoes and put in SuperFeet.  I use the green ones.  I feel more comfortable with the shoes now.  Anecdotal, but they work for me.

Superfeet green insoles work for me.  I wouldn't run without them.  The problem with them on trail running is they seem to slow down the draining when doing a creek crossing.

I pay for it when I'm lazy and don't switch them back to my road shoes and go for a run without support.
