BigDLobo - 2013-05-08 7:56 AM I don't live terribly close and am never in that part of town so I can't help you out with any pictures, but in looking at a google aerial image and then the swim course map, this could be a very interesting swim. I am more use to an out and back via a triangle or a rectangle, not a weird multi-turning course like this one. I can foresee some congestion around the turns because it does not look like a large lake at all.

Because of the wave start, the congestion you're worried about is relatively minimal.  The "lake" is not large at all.  It's as much a water feature around a hotel and office buildings as anything else, but was fine to swim in last year.  It's plenty big enough for the number of participants that will go off at each wave.

I was mostly curious since it looked so small. I am looking forward to going out there to do the race, just hoping the swim is nice and clean. I hate swimming in filthy water.

Last year it was just a triangle, you start at the southwest corner, go north then come back then go east then come back to the same corner.

The "lake" is very green, but the buildings make sighting really easy.  I don't remember being able to touch the bottom, I'm 6"2.

This is not the lake for you then.  It is probably the nastiest pond in the metroplex.  I did the olympic last year and the start was in a narrow short canal.  If I remember correctly the third bouy is impossible to sight until you get around a bend on the opposite side of the lake.  Other then the swim the event is one of the better produced races in the area.

As stated above, more drainage ditch than lake (with the corresponding water quality) but sufficiently large you don't have to worry too much about bunching. It feels larger than the similarly constructed "lake" used for the stone bridge ranch Olympic in September.

agree w/ previous posts about it being pretty gross.  but i thought the lake at stonebridge was cleaner and bigger (and freaking cold that morning!!).

i think i have a pic of me getting out of the water somewhere.  i'll look for it and post if i can.

They currently show the water temp. on the web site as 74 degrees. What percentage of people will likely wear a wetsuit for the Olympic if it stays under 78. I ask not becuase I need it to make the swim, but because I will have to wear on in WIsconsin this summer for my half and feel this would be good practice. No other chance for me to swim this distance in it before my half. I don't care much about what others think but also don't want to be the lone ranger out there with one on. Thanks

Not knowing when they took it, I have to believe that temp is rain-induced during the last week. Unless the area gets more rain between now and then, I can't imagine it'll stay under 78 given how warm it's forecasted to be between now and then and how small the body of water is. If it's under 78, though, I'd be shocked if many/most were not in wetsuits for the olympic distance...too much free speed to pass up at that distance!

With that said, you should be allowed to wear the wetsuit even if it's over 78 (and under 84), but you'd not be eligible for awards (if that's a problem for you, more power to you!)...I'd expect you'd be the only one in a wetsuit, though, and you'd probably be pretty hot, too.

Looks like the course has change a little. Sprint bike is listed as 15 mi on a 2 loop course. With the oly doing 3 loops and the first tri doing 1 loop I hope there are not to many entries to make a crowded bike.

It looks like we may get some rain tonight and also on Saturday, this very well could be a wetsuit swim. Plus the low is 65 with a high of 85, more motivation to get done quicker!

I am feeling great about this race! How about the rest of you?

Are you tapering for it, or is it a training race?

I am also looking forward to it. The weather looks like it is going to be great. It has been really windy up here in Dallas this Spring and it appears we will get a nice little reprieve from it on Sunday. My taper will be to only do a light jog Saturday. I typically swim on Fridays and will still do that since it is easy on the legs. If I normally have a long run on Fridays i would probably drop it or shorten it; no reason to show up on too tired of legs.

I rode the bike course last Sunday to get a feel for it. It rained on me for about half the ride. Depending on how many athletes are there, I think the roads might get pretty congested. And based on the route, I assume they'll keep one lane of Royal Ln. open, which I'm sure be super busy. I hope the coppers do their job and make them stop so we can pass.
The run will be extremely spectator friendly, since we run up and down Las Colinas Blvd several times. Our families/friends will see us pass by 4 times on just the sprint distance.

Was it fast and flat? Or was it hilly with rough roads?

I'll wear a wetsuit unless they tell me I can't. Their website is still showing 77 degree water, and with rain today and a low of 61 tonight, I don't see it getting any warmer.

Was the water really 77 degrees? They announced it but that was the warmest 77 degrees that I've ever swam in.

Big thumbs down to the 5.45 mile "6" mile run.

Both PlayTri and USAT independently measured the water temperature at 77 (USAT had 76.9). But do you usually find 77 degrees cold?

Both the bike and run were a bit short (I didn't measure the swim, but I think it was short as well). I heard they had some issues with the city of Irving this year which impacted the bike and run course, but don't know for sure. But a race is a race, I had a good time. You couldn't have asked for better weather.

I didnt use a wetsuit and the water was fine by me. I saw some guy shivering and gasping holding on to the wall as soon as i got in the water. He was trying to get out.

The swim was WAY short and the run was WAY short as well. I hope they can get the distance thing figured out. I really like the race. Plus it was weird to find out day of the race the bike was changed to 2 loops and 15 mi. They could have at least put something in the packet about it. I did like the bike course though.

um you did 2 loops? cause on the bike it was supposed to be 3 loops to make 21.7 miles. they called it 22, the run showed 5.3 on my Garmin, but they called it 6... It was a fun and flat race, but the first one they have done with that course.

It was a ton of fun though, I will do it again for sure if it fits in my race schedule again.

Sprint was 2 loops, International was 3 loops.

I really liked the race, everything seemed pretty laid back but organized at the same time. I will definitely be back next year. My only complaint about the bike would be the U-turn at both ends, but it's a necessary evil of the course.
