Extreme Veteran 856 Detroit, Michigan | Subject: I'm not rude, I'm just near-sighted (story: accidentally hogging a pool lane) It's 6:30 a.m., I'm tired, and I'm off in my own little world this morning. I tend to get ear infections easily so I swim with earplugs, and I wear my regular, non-prescription goggles in the pool. I also always breathe toward the wall (right on the way out, left on the way back). I thought I heard something on one of my turns but it was a busy morning at the pool and I just assumed as I paddled away it was people talking. On my next trip to the shallow end I see legs in my lane and someone looking annoyed. OOOOPS! Of course I scooted over right away. Sorry, fellow swimmer. I didn't even see you. ... No, literally. I didn't even see you. Or hear you. Or even notice you, really. Sorry! |

I didn't even see you. Or hear you. Or even notice you, really. Sorry! No need to apologize - you did nothing wrong. I will first try to get invited to share a lane by standing at the edge of the lanes. If that doesn't work (they make a turn or two at the wall without acknowledging me), I'll drop my legs in and wait for them to make another turn at the wall. There has never been an instance where the person didn't stop and talk or simply just continue swimming (towards one side). It's perfectly acceptable, in my opinion, to move over to the side and continue swimming your set after someone drop thier legs in your lane. I do it all the time. |

Expert 2098 Ontario Canada | Subject: RE: I'm not rude, I'm just near-sighted (story: accidentally hogging a pool lane) Miles- Definitely grab some prescription swim Goggles they don't need to be 100% accurate prescription just something close to yours although I have both exact and Close ones, best thing I ever Did, they are not that much more then regular goggles and being able to see all the time is awesome. I used to do the same thing as I swim with my waterproof I-pod in and I am a -7 diopter so basically fall into the blind as a bat category as well but not Now I see great with the prescription swim goggles make me feel much more comfortable doing OWS swims Too. I'm blind too, found Rx goggles at swimoutlet.com for something like 10 or 15 bucks, they're totally worth it. Sporti S2 is the model, I believe. |

I'd be afraid that someone, thinking I know they are there, would just jump in and start swimming without my knowledge. "Moving Over" let's people know you are aware of them and are making space for them. |

Well, as long as they stay on their side of the lane then they are free to just start swimming without my knowledge and I will notice them next time I am coming back down the lane. It happens to me all the time. |

Expert 2180 Boise, Idaho | Subject: RE: I'm not rude, I'm just near-sighted (story: accidentally hogging a pool lane) I'm usually practicing my sighting, at least one 'look' per length. I don't lke surprises. I also think everyone, whatever it is they're doing, needs to have at least a little bit of 'situational awareness'. If you don't notice someone standing on the pool edge-how will you notice someone drowning in the lane next to you? |

I'd agree with you, but at this pool it's usually me and one other guy in the very early mornings. This might be the third or fourth time I've shared a lane at this time -- it's usually verrrrrrry quiet. I should have been paying closer attention when I noticed that the pool was filling up, but see my previous note about the time and me being tired. =) As far as the prescription goggles, I do have a the reading glasses-esque kind, but I usually only wear them for OWS so they don't get scratched unnecessarily. All turned out well -- we all got our swims in. |

It has nothing to do with being a lane hog. I'm the first person to invite people into my lane (karma points for when I'm the one standing on deck looking for a spot). Moving over is simply a way for me to communicate "come on in, I'll share" when I see someone waiting and I don't want to stop my current interval. If they are still standing there when I stop at the wall, I'll verbally ask them if they want to share. |

They might be in the middle of a set...I give them at least 200 before I start to think they are being rude...I certainly will finish my set if I have less than 200 before stopping to talk to someone....they need to be patient...people are in the middle of a workout! |

You know, there are actually pools that don't allow circle swimming, only splitting lanes. So, just follow the rules of the pool |

Veteran 2297 Great White North | Subject: RE: I'm not rude, I'm just near-sighted (story: accidentally hogging a pool lane) There are pool managers who know f all about swimming. We swam 20+ per lane during LCM season... Any pool with such rules is moronic. If I ever visit such a pool I will swim a 10000 for time. If anyone stops me I will tell them they are free to circle swim in my lane if they want to be a rebel. |

By circle swimming someone can join you without you having to stop and more than two people can swim in a lane at the same time. At most pools the actual rule is to circle swim. |
