Recently had "friends" co-erce me into signing up for the big local triathlon. What was I thinking? Looks like a great site and forum, let me introduce myself

48-yo male, married, three sons. Woke up New Year's Day 1999, realized I was fat, old, ugly and stupid, decided to do something about the fat part. Started walking, lost 65 lbs. then started running. Ran my first 10K on my 45th birthday, ran my first marathon fourteen months later, ran three more that year (2001) and, of course, developed an overuse injury. Started cycling as I recovered, got hooked on that. In total, have now run nine marathons (Chicago will be #10) and ridden a dozen or so centuries.

Used to think I was a good swimmer until I tried to swim for any distance, quickly convinced otherwise. Lack of swimming ability and time has kept me from tri-ing, but now I'm roped into it. Will do the CajunMan Triathlon (.5/20/3.1) on September 12, but may do a shorter one in August to get my feet wet (intentional pun).

Look forward to all the good advice and help you guys are going to give me!

;-)

Hey, welcome Bear. Great intro. Youll like it here, lots of good advice. I think one of the best things about tri-ing (or more precisely the training) is less wear and tear bc of the cross training. From a little younger, less fat, father of 2 boys (i'll leave the stupid and ugly things alone for now).

Good luck,
Mark

Hey, it's local and has a fun party after. And maybe I can brag that I finished 53 in the state (in my age group)! ;-)

Welcome aboard and the best of luck on your tri. Hey, "fat, old, ugly and stupid" is how most of us started on this forum. We can't do much about being old or ugly but we can broaden our knowledge so that we may become "fit, albeit old and ugly but knowledgeable".
