Subject: Fishing internal cable housing
Does anyone have a tip on how to remove some shifter cable housing from inside a CD01 downtube? The front derailleur tunnel in the downtube has a bit in there that I can't seem to tease out - is it possible it's permanently anchored near the exit hole for some reason? Can't really replace the cabling until I can get it out. Thanks in advance.

might want to email Qroo and find out if the inernal housing is supposed to be taken out... most modern bikes allow for it but I am not 100%

I've fished out housing some pretty creative ways before... if it is supposed to come out we'll try to come up with one that'll work for you.

Yeah, I have a dialog going with QR as well. There *should* be housing, because they aren't any stops to maintain tension within the down tube once the cable enters, like on a Felt, Cervelo, etc - so you need the housing with ferrules at both ends (bar end and exit hole to provide the housing with something to stop against. I can't imagine this housing belongs in there permanently though, makes the bike not serviceable. My 'best' idea so far is to drill the exit hole just wide enough to get a clothes hanger in there, but not so wide that the ferrule won't still provide the stop. I know from the piece I did pull out it was compressionless jagwire; the reason it doesn't just slide out is that it's bent into an angle. If I can push it down far enough so it gets past the bend at the bottom bracket, it'll be straight enough slide out the top.

can you still run a cable through it?

If so you can try running a cable through backwards and pulling it out that way. Depending on how small the hole is you might have to shave the head of the cable to allow it in.

Drilling is absolutely last case. I've seen it done before but I'd suggest exhausting all other options first.

I can run a cable through it backwards, but how does that help? The exit hole (which I'd be putting said cable through) is only wide enough for the cable, and not big enough for a cable end which would provide the tension against the end of the housing allowing me to pull it up. Can you descrive what you're thinking of?

For future readers, if there are any, I ended up fraying a brake cable at the end, twisting it into the hole (running the cable backwards), and twisting and turning until it freed up. It was then a cinch to push it up to the entry hole and take it out. All in all, took about 10 minutes of execution, 30 minutes of staring at it, and 2 beers. Not too shabby. Just have to switch the wheels and my brand new (to me, it's a used frame) bike is all ready to go.

Glad you got it without having to resort to drilling. Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday, but sounds like you handled it fine.
