Subject: Pre-Race Bike Drop Off/Check In Question:

First HIM this weekend. Very excited and ready! Gulf Coast Tri in Panama City, FL (home of the IMFL) and the check in information says that upon bike check in, you can cover your seat and bike computer, but can not use full bike covers for overnight protection etc. Not an issue for me, but what would the reason be against a bike cover- just curious?

I am guessing wind knocking the bikes around.

one for them blowing around and people not looking for them.

another is so they can see the bar end plugs. It's a go/no-go rule.

I've never understood why people feel like they need to cover the seats. You don't want to sit on a wet seat? Ummm, perhaps I'm missing something but didn't you just get out of a body of water and isn't your butt still soaked from it?

Take your computer off and put it back on in the morning when you go to pump your tires up.

I was thinking the same thing about seats being wet- big deal right? Just swam 1.2. I agree. Good reason though so they can inspect bar end plugs etc. Thanks for response.

The him I did last year didn't let anyone cover their seats, and it was raining cats and dogs the day before. It wasn't bad since my seat doesn't hold a lot of water but in some races I would imagine the seat could soak up a lot over night and cause issues.

Inspect bar end plugs?  I don't follow.

They won't let you race without bar end plugs.

If you have a tri bike setup, it's not a problem, you don't have bar ends.

If you have road bike handlebars, you've got bar end plugs. If they're not there and you get in a wreck, your body gets core sampled should anything hit the bar.

Here is the USAT rule, with a convenient picture:
