Okay ... I'm confused at the significant difference in elevation gain reported by Garmin v. MapMyRide.

Here is the MapMyRide Data - Reports 2,539.37 ft of total gain:

Here is the Garmin Connect Data - Reports 5,774 ft of total gain (Elevation Corrections enabled):

That's a big difference. Thoughts?

The algorithms each use is very different.  Garmin Connect is more accurate in my opinion than Mapmyride.  Mapmyride way underestimates it's elevation gains and losses.  The only way to manually verify this is to pull out a topo map and count contour elevations, then compare it to the two products on the same route.

I run Strava and MapMyRide concurrently.   Strava is consistently 30-50% higher in its elevation numbers.  I don't know which one is right though but I go by the MapMyRide numbers to be conservative when estimating how much I've actually done.

I don't trust elevation from MapMyRide at all.  I have a 40 mile loop I ride with tons of very short but fairly steep hills.  If I map it as a 40 mile loop, I get elevation gain x.  If I map it as 4-10 mile sections and total the gain, I get .65x.  That shows their algorithm is really screwy.

FWIW, if I do the same thing on courses with longer, steadier ascents, the difference is not nearly as much.

Map my ride is totally inaccurate in ascent data, I mean TOTALLY! I recently did IM OZ and map my run reported elevation gain of 585 mt. My SUUNTO reported 1790mt!!!When I did Auckland 70.3, map my ride said 265mt and SUUNTO ambit 400mt.I ride with a group and they post the routes online, one day I thought I was going to be able to do one of the routes as on map my ride, elevation was 580mt........It was 1345mt!!!!

The same route plugged into RunningAhead actually has the gain at 6,000ft +. I'm inclined to go with Garmin as the more accurate of the two based on this and a lot of reading I've done since initially posting this.
