I do a four mile loop from my house for most of my runs. Today was an hour, so two loops. The loop actually starts a block and a half from my house so I usually jog there, stash my hydration bottle near a telephone pole, then start the Garmin and get going. All is well today. Loop one done, take a big swig of Gatorade, and off for lap two. Sometimes I grab my bottle as I'm passing and run while drinking before dropping it at the next pole. Today I stopped, swigged, replaced it, and headed out. Upon returning from lap two, the bottle is gone. WTF? It's one of my good bottles too - Purist Hydroflow. I think I paid like $15 for it a few weeks ago to replace a worn out one. That can't be. Really, someone stole my half empty Gatorade bottle? So I stop the Garmin (at :59:22 - i'll make up those last 38 seconds later) and ponder the situation. Hmmm....maybe I carried it to the next pole with me without remembering - nope! By now I've recovered my wind a bit and am beginning to think more like Inspector Gadget or those brainiacs at Mathnet rather than the out of breath annoyed runner circa five minutes ago. I look around pondering what could have happened. Maybe I'll wait for the dufus who stole it to run back by .... I can hide in a bush! Nah, not worth it. Maybe the owner of the house in front of where I left it got sick of looking at it and threw it out - more likely in my mind than an outright theft. So I assess the front yardage situation going on. The house to my left has some trash debris in it, and to my right there is what I can only assume is the remnants of a Boston hockey fan who'd had one too many and then hit up some Doritos Locos late night tacos before forgetting what a trash can looks like. At any rate, I notice that the amount of trash in the yard from which my bottle is missing is quite a bit cleaner than those around it, including across the street. Thing is, the yard on the house side of the sidewalk is fenced, gated, and landscaped to the nines. To get to his front door means reaching over the iron gate to unlatch it, making my way through the garden of Eden, past who knows what kind of snakes, apple trees, pit bulls, Etc..... At that moment, it wasn't worth it, so I started on my way home. Just then the mail man drives by and I wave (Larry and I get along real well)! A few steps later it dawns on me. I didn't see a mailbox. If Larry has to go through that gate and down that path to deliver the mail, it's probably safe for me. So I turn around and make my move. Get to he front door eventually and try the door bell....nothing. Give a few good firm knocks .....nothing. Looks pretty quiet so I figure, eh, I gave it a try. As I'm walking back down the path to leave a guy comes from around the house and asks, "May I help you?" Sweet, he's home! All I get out of my mouth is, "I'm sorry to bother you this morning, but....." He cuts me off and says, "The water bottle?" Woooohooooooo!!! He said he'd seen it lying by the pole and thought it was trash someone had thrown out. Great! So he opens the garage and goes and picks it up from his work bench, a spotless garage with nothing on the work bench but my bottle, and three trash cans right next to it. Hmmmmm....... At any rate, I got my bottle back. I'm a little suspicious of his claim, but hey, if he thinks someone can throw a half full bottle of Gatorade from their moving car and have it land standing upright on top of an electrical box next to a telephone pole then hey, maybe I'll head back over his way later today to sell him some of this magic potion I've been working on. The again, he did give it back to me, so maybe an honest mistake. I was just tickled pink when he said he had it.

I pick up trash laying near my house all the time, I wish more people did the same. Just be happy some kids didn't "add" to your bottle then hide in the bushes and wait for you to take a swig

There is a bush a few blocks from my house I like to toss the bottle in when going by in the summer. The lady of the house said it was ok when I was out running one day, but not long ago I tossed it under the bush and the old fella in there came out yelling that I was trashing up his yard.

OOPS..

The only thing I can think of when reading this is "Why do you need a water bottle for a 60 min run?"

And if you must have one, why not just run with a handheld?

That is a great story, and a happy ending even:)

When I run out in the country I stash my hydration too, primarily because there really is no freakin place to get a drink.  None.  And I hide it because I'm paranoid, as some other poster mentioned, that someone might find it and "add" to it.

Last year, mile 18 of a 22 (very thirsty, very hot +90), someone freakin ganked my bottle.  I couldn't believe it!  I thought, like you, maybe I had misremembered my stash-spot. Nope.  I think it was some kids who saw me "hide" it earlier that a.m.from the house across the street and down a bit.

I was outta my mind mad and dangerously dehydrated with no back-up. Sucked.

I admire your tenacity in tracking your bottle down.  Awesome.

I do my repeat loops right from my front door.  If I'm doing 8-10 miles I leave a bottle in the paper slot under my mail box nd grab it on the way by.

Funny story.

Why do we need a water bottle on an hour run?  Because it's hot out there, practice drinking on the fly, and because it's better do stash one than listen to one slop in your hand for an hour (or longer).

So...how did you throw it and make it land right side up?  : )

I get Christmas decorations stolen from my house every year (last year was a 3ft tall lit up penguin.) and a few weeks ago I got a nice egg covered picture window (top floor in a split level house, that was fun to clean up.) There's no way I'm leaving a water bottle out in front of my house. Sad part is I live in an otherwise nice small town.

"Because it's hot out there"... this is kind of relative. I run in 100+ degree South Texas summers and dont take water unless i'm going out for 90 min or more, or unless i'm doing a track workout. Maybe its just me.

"Practice drinking on the fly" ... for what purpose?

"listen to one slop in your hand for an hour" ... I've never had this issue.  I barely even notice my handheld is there until I want a drink.

You must have missed the thread a few weeks ago where everyone was bragging about how long they could run without water.

Well he is trying to keep up the neighborhood.

A story on BT a few years back, had someone having same issue and it was the church next door kept picking up the bottles and putting them in recycling.

I carry mine with me or go back home. I would never consider putting a bottle in someone elses yard unless I knew them and asked them.

Yeah that was my first thought too.  Little bit of white space makes things easier to read....

Second though, why would you LEAVE something of value unattended, out in public in the open, and expect it to be there later? If you carry the bottle on you, it isn't likely to walk off with someone else.

After having a few kidney stones this year, I am staying hydrated on every run, 30 min or more. I got a hand held for my short runs, and I always try to keep a camel bak for my long ones. I will hopefully never have to deal with that kind of stone pain again.
You go ahead though and not drink if you don't want to. Ill keep hydrating.

I sweat like a sieve. On an hour long run in 80* overcast weather with average humidity I'll lose 3-4-5 lbs depending on the effort. It's one of my major limiters. Wish it wasn't so :-(

Regarding no white space ..... I can't figure out how to make the Ipad "return." It drives me nuts. My computer is normal!

I've thought before about people tampering with my bottles and if it happens, it happens. I have faith in the world, and like to believe it will be okay. Until I encounter a problem, I'll keep stashing. Sometimes I leave gels too :-) The guy at the house said if he sees it again he'll know not to throw it away! See, I made a friend :-)

1. You don't need water for a 60 min run, or even a 90 min run unless it's 90F+ out.

2. Learn to bring your hydration with you on training runs. Camelbaks or hip packs or hand bottles all work well.

3. Assume all stashed stuff off your property will be lost. The value of the item is often less important than getting to that crucial water stop on a hot day and realizing you have to cut short your workout because your stashed bottle is gone.

I agree with 2 and 3 but really, who is anyone else to judge what a person does or does not tolerate with regards to water and the length of run they do.  I run at 5000+ feet in the middle of the desert.  I am betting my needs are maybe a bit different then yours.

1. I can assure you I benefit from water on runs over 45 minutes. Over 60 minutes without and my joints start to get sore, I stop sweating, and my thirst is through the roof.

2. I stash fluid because I want to, not because I don't know how to carry it.

3. If my stash was gone mid run, I'd turn right, cross the busy road, run two blocks to my house, and get a drink.

I'm happy you've found what works best for you and encourage you to believe that others have given as much consideration to their training decisions as you have.

I wasn't trying to create controversy with my questions. I was just thinking the entire problem could have been avoided if you either run without water for 60 min, or keep your water with you in a handheld or camelbak or something.
