Subject: Let's talk about cooking in a wok...
And where can I buy one cheap? I've developed a real love of Indian and stir fry, and a wok seems like the perfect way to make it, since I dont have any pans big enough. Any suggestions? recipies?

Oh goodness, I LOVE MY WOK! I use it for everything. I received mine as a gif. It's pretty high quality. I suggest buying one from amazon.com.

I find a lot of my recipes on the internet. Try epicurious.com, foodnetwork.com, or just do a general search for "wok recipes".

I make stir-fry a lot. I get pretty cretive with it. Eggs and soy sauce are a must. As for indian food, I make a lot of curries that I usually have to simmer, so I don't use a wok for Indian food.

Who says you have to use a wok? I've done stir fry in a frying pan. And a regular quart pot. If you want to be real picky about it, you could get a veggie and rice steamer, or just hang a strainer over a pot with boiling water.

You too?  I love a mam who can cook.  I'm a chef too and I love to cook with men.  My poor husband can make the toast and the open a can of chef boy r d's....So I have to find other men to cook with.   It's one of the best things in life...to share a kitchen and make wonderful food and have a great meal with fun conversation!

Yeah, my wife loves a man who can cook. Mostly because she cannot.

Heehee!!!! She once tried to use my digital thermometer to test the temp of some chicken, and couldn't understand why it wasn't changing. Then I walked in and saw her sticking it into the chicken, while still in its plastic sheath. I grabbed it and looked at it....whole tube was plugged with chicken! Of course, this is the same girl who tried to make meatloaf with 2 cups of water, an entire bullion cube, half a bottle of ketchup, and a slice of bread cut (torn to be precise) into quarters. Needless to say, that was a pizza night. She is learning, though, I give her that. She has learned not to use the digital thermometer at least.

Hey what kinda wok are you looking to buy?
I have a heck of a time finding electric ones anymore and I don't have a gas stove.
The last one I bought I found at Target but the quality is not so good and most of the coating is long gone.
Oh, and guys who cook are TOTALLY hot! So are guys that shop at Bath and Body Works!

im perfectly happy cooking on a stove w/ a pan. I've been told that the wok gets super hot and therefore seals in the flavor of the food better.

It's not that the pan necessarily gets super hot. That just depends on how hot you set the heat on your burner. It's the overall shape that's key. Allows the food to be moved around constantly, coated in oil (and being cooked the whole time), while cutting down on spills and the amount of oil needed.

The link above will give some tips and info on using a wok versus a regular pan.

Just please promise me you won't use metal utensils in the wok. Make sure its heat safe plastic or wooden. If not the surface of your wok will last 3 months if you're lucky. I wish I could find a wok that will fit in my dishwasher. Hey I'm not lazy, just looking for more time to train.

Yeah but the mens selection at Bath and Body Works is so limited. Men get what....one shelf? I prefer my time well spent at William Sanoma and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

Yes, because traditional wok has a round bottom which creates a heat spot that cook super fast. Also, commercial stove has biggest firepower then any regular stove. Therefore, it makes no difference cooking with a flat-bottom wok or a pan. It's just that a wok is deeper so that you can stir your stuff. Make sure you use a spatula or a pair of big chopsticks that won't scratch the wok surface when you cook. Soak wok immediately after cook to avoid burn-ins. Remember: Hot wok cold oil food won't stick. A rice cooker, I think it's totally worth the money, but it has to be the kind that has a non-stick interior.

OOOOOOO.....William Sonoma is like, my own personal sex store. I get all weak-kneed whenever I go in one. Then I just wander around in wonder, looking at all the wonderful itchen utensils and such that I cannot afford.

As for non-metal spatular and scratching, it depends on what type of material your wok is made of.  The traditional one is made of metal and when stir fry with a metal spatular, it generate the well-known "cling cling cling cling" noise in the kitchens of chinese families. 

Nowadays most cookware are coated so you'll need to be careful of scratching.  This also makes it difficult to control the temperature.  I have this coated wok which takes forever to heat up.  Very annoying.  Wanted to get a metal one but it won't do much good on my stupid induction stove top.

I have a hand made metal wok from Hong Kong but when others in my house use metal on it, then scratches and nicks occur.

And I know where I'm taking Scout when I come to PA........
