The only time I have ridden the 70.3 course in Lawrence was during the race last year. For those of you who have ridden it a bunch, how is the traffic on those roads? I'm a little oversensitive to such things after unintentionally ending up on a 60 MPH highway with no shoulder during a long ride last year.

I'm taking the day off on Friday and I'm thinking about riding the course that morning if the weather cooperates.

Traffic is fairly light. It wouldn't surprise me to see a higher volume of cars in certain areas, but it is still rural. The shoulder width is decent and during this time of the year as the race approaches you see a fair number of other people out there biking, which hopefully implies that the local folk have been accustomed to seeing triathletes out there biking and give us a little room. You'll encounter most of the cars between dam hill and the "iron cross" and again it's not that bad. Once you make your left there at the iron cross intersection the traffic becomes much more sparse.

Between racing and training I've biked the course about 10 times. There are definitely cars out there driving but I've personally never felt unsafe or encountered any bad or rude drivers. Hopefully, others have had the same experience.

As an FYI, the Leavenworth tri club is going to be doing a "group ride" of the course on friday, leaving T1 around 9AMish, with a practice OWS to follow. That alone is worth the membership dues for a year to me. Ride will have a water station and SAG. Everyone will go at their own pace, so not a group ride in that sense.

Might be worth checking them out if your going Friday anyways.

Wow, 9 AM is pretty much exactly when I was planning on taking off from there. Seems like a great idea. I dropped an email to the club management. Thanks!

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
