Ocean Shores, Washington
United States
74F / 23C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 13m 13s
Overall Rank = 3/57
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 1/
Pre-race routine:

15 minute warm up on Bike with sprints up to LT then zone 3 x 6
Swim
  • 00m
  • 1640 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

Dark water and minimal contact after first 5 minutes, sun light together with fogged goggles made return swim harder to keep the line of return.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up in water to get muscles (shoulders) ready
Transition 1
  • 00m 28s
Comments:

Very long (100 yards) run from water to TA, though it allowed for wetsuit to come all the way below butt.
What would you do differently?:

get a better start IE jump on bike verses from standing
Bike
  • 1h 05m
  • 24.6 miles
  • 22.71 mile/hr
Comments:

No split time for bike by athleteslounge.com so it is lumped as a very interesting T2 time so estimate of just over a minute T2 time and did the math for the results above.
What would you do differently?:

I think I had to decide whether to pass the first person I did, which I would do again but I think I pushed way too hard to catch the other three I passed. I ended up passing everyone I did in the 1st lap so what I am thinking was a steady push could have resulted in me passing them on the second lap which would have made it harder for them to chase me. Mental thought here is they would have raced there race pushing themselves and then I would pass when they were at their low.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

I almost lost it coming in the in chute to the transition area ...gravel and tight turn in. Atleast I was off the bike and not barefooted.
What would you do differently?:

nothing I can think of
Run
  • 37m 20s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

I cannot explain how blown away I am with my pace, though a little stressed over how this will effect my 1/2 IM
What would you do differently?:

pacing but not sure I would have passed anyone with pacing or finished the way I did . as run really too short to think the two behind me and two I passed would have been catchable if I paced.
Post race
Warm down:

little to none except walking it out with the boys.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

swim did not get in rithem fast enough

Event comments:

My first race so not much to compare to but overall very satisfied with the organizers and how they impressed my sedentary children who know little fitness with their mother.

out and back HR was high but felt good
Course: lots of scenery made for fast course. only one mile 1/2 out and 1/2 back was nasty with very irregular terrain. 2 miles on beach was cool and turns out those were my fastest miles turning just over 5:30 and just under 5:30 between the time out and back. Got a side stitch following last dixie cup of energy drink but ran through it...still think I had just enough fluids.

Do you normally run that fast? My times were to0 fast. By my educated guess it was only a 5 mile run based on my normal run times.
