Pre-race routine:

Probably not the best idea to have this on the docket the weekend after vacation, but we basically created a 2nd vacation for it and stayed in Cape May Friday-Monday. Did the mandatory bike check in and packet stuff on Saturday afternoon. Jenean bowed out of this one so we could bring Opal down with us and give her a little beach vacation.

Comments:

What else is there to say? You jump of the ferry 10 feet down into the Delaware Bay! Awesome! The only thing I had problems with were the goggles. It was emphasized that you need to hold on to them when you jumped, which I did, but not enough apparently. They kept leaking and I had to stop to empty them out a few times. First time really in the ocean like that, so I have nothing to compare it too. The current was really strong, which was nice, but timing the waves with your sighting and breathing was not my strong suit.
A new experience, so really, I'm fine with it. it was just a lot of fun.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my goggles are securely on my face.
Transition 1
  • 04m 42s
Comments:

It's a long run to the transition area, up the beach, through a parking lot and around the transition area. When the run to transition is that long, it's hard for me to give it a grade. I'd love to be quicker, but it's a work in progress. I kind of walked out of the water and through some of the sand and started running once I got to a little firmer ground.
What would you do differently?:

I'm still wasting a lot of time in transition. Need to clean it up.
Bike
  • 29m 52s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.35 mile/hr
Comments:

A lot of turns on this course, and a little patch of rougher pavement, but overall a pretty nice course. Part of the course is closed to traffic and there really wasn't much anyway. It was basically flat, the only real incline was up and over a bridge. The final stretch of the ride coming back to transition was straight and flat but there was a little wind.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I would do differently. Just need to continue to improve.
Transition 2
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

I was racked pretty close to the bike in/out. But obviously that means I had to get through the transition area to the run out and I got turned around a little bit, so it probably wasn't as direct as it could have been.
What would you do differently?:

Again, I'm awful in transition. Get better!
Run
  • 23m 40s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 41s  min/km
Comments:

More of this course was on the sand than I expected, so that took a toll on me. I'm definitely not used to running on the sand like that. I'm not happy with that time at all, but considering the terrain and my lack of experience with it, I guess I can't complain too much.
What would you do differently?:

Other than getting some beach running in, not sure what I could do.
Post race
Warm down:

Got myself a nice plate of food and relaxed under the ETA tent for a while.

Event comments:

Fantastic event. I loved it. Jumping off the ferry is really cool and makes for a unique event. Looking forward to next year.

Congrats! Looked like a cool (but hard) race.
Any other races planned for this season?

I think I'm doing Lenape in July and one in Western PA in August.

My big one this year will be the Olympic in Atlantic City in September.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

At some point I remember thinking about the movie CAPE FEAR. This is what it seemed like when I was around a lot of people. It was just a lot of commotion of waves, arms and feet.

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
